Doñana: «La Conjura de los necios», por Juan Carmona

No puedo entender cómo es posible que haya en estos días tanta gente indocumentada hablando y opinando de un tema tan serio, importante y científico, como la situación del Parque Nacional de Doñana.

Y no me refiero sólo a periodistas y tertulianos, de los que ya se sabe lo que se puede esperar, sobre todo me refiero a políticos de todo color. Empezando por nuestro Presidente, que ha afirmado categóricamente que él salvará Doñana (54.000 Hectáreas de Parque y el doble de parque).

Y la cuestión es, ¿por qué no empezaron antes?  La respuesta es obvia: ahora estamos en periodo electoral, y encima la tremenda sequía. ¿pero sabían lo que pasaba o deberían saberlo? He cogido el título de la novela de un gran escritor americano (FORD). Creo que refleja lo que está pasando.

La batalla política ha conseguido implicar a la propia Unión Europea, donde tampoco conocen la historia, pero hacen como siempre «dar una patada a la pelota p’alante».

Bien. Una vez dicho que en el mundo lo que sobra es agua (somos el planeta azul), aunque está desigualmente repartida, y que el agua como la energía ni se crea ni se destruye, solo se transforma y cambia de ubicación, se puede pensar que utilizarla (desalinizarla) es caro.

Sí, puede serlo depende de para qué. Para beberla es carísimo, pero menos del cinco por ciento del agua que se consume es para beberla, toda la demás es para regar, refrigerar, limpiar….

En la comarca de Doñana este debate existe desde siempre. Y los políticos, los sindicatos, los regantes, los ecologistas, y la administración pública, ya discutían esto hace decenas de años. Y consta todo por escrito en las actas del Patronato de Doñana. Pero no se hacía nada práctico, y la pena es que ni se hace. Los ayuntamientos con los agricultores y los sindicatos reclamaban agua del acuífero para más y más regadíos, y permitían que una población artificial como Matalascañas creciera y creciera, y ¡hasta un campo de golf inauguró el Presidente! Los ecologistas serios como WWF advertían del disparate y la administración (Junta de Andalucía gobernada por el PSOE durante casi 40 años) miraba para otro lado.

De desaladoras baratas (el agua para regar o limpiar no es tan cara) ni se hablaba, de trasvases de corta distancia tampoco, y de racionalizar el uso copiando tecnologías modernas, como la israelí o la californiana, tampoco.

Y así estamos, jugando con la gente para que voten, diciendo barbaridades y disparates, sin sentarse todos con humildad para implementar soluciones alternativas obvias, que no son efectivas mañana, ni pasado mañana, pero que diseñen un futuro.

No se trata de arrasar residencias y regadíos, como puede llegar a pedir la sociedad malinformada.

SALVAR Doñana empieza por no mentir, y continúa por trabajar.

I cannot understand how these days there can be so many uninformed people talking and giving their opinions on such a serious, important and scientific subject as the situation facing the Doñana National Park

And I am not just referring to journalists and pundits, from whom we know what to expect, but above all to politicians of all stripes. Starting with our President, who has categorically stated that he will save Doñana (54,000 hectares of parkland and twice as much land).

And the question is, why didn’t they begin earlier?  The answer is obvious: we are now in an election period, and the tremendous drought to boot. But did they know what was happening, or should they have known? I borrowed the title of a novel by a great American writer (FORD). I think it reflects what is happening.

The political battle has managed to involve the European Union itself, in which they don’t know the history either, but they do as always «kick the ball forward».

Good. Once it has been said that there is plenty of water in the world (we are the blue planet), although it is unevenly distributed, and that water, like energy, is neither created nor destroyed, it is only transformed and changes location, one might think that using it (desalinating it) is expensive.

Yes, it can be, depending on what it is used for. For drinking water it is very expensive, but less than five percent of the water consumed is for drinking, all the rest is for irrigation, refrigeration, cleaning, etc……

This debate has always existed within the Doñana region. Politicians, trade unions, irrigators, ecologists, and the public administration have been discussing this for dozens of years. It is all written down in the Doñana Board of Trustees’ records. But nothing practical has been done, and the pity is that it is not even being done right now. The town councils, together with the farmers and trade unions, demanded water from the aquifer for endless amounts of irrigation, and allowed an artificial town like Matalascañas to continue to grow, with the President even inaugurating a golf course! Serious environmentalists like WWF warned against the nonsense while the administration (Andalusian government run by PSOE for almost 40 years) looked the other way.

Neither was there any talk of cheap desalination plants (water for irrigation or cleaning is not that expensive), nor of short-distance water transfers, nor of rationalising water use by copying modern technologies, such as the Israeli or Californian systems.

And so here we are, toying and fooling the people to get them to vote, talking outrage and utter nonsense, without humbly sitting down to implement obvious alternative solutions, which are not to be effective right away tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, but which design a future.

It is not a question of razing homes and irrigation systems, as the misinformed society may demand.

SAVING Doñana starts by not lying, and then continues through work.
