Francisco Cuenca: “El resort no es sólo nuestro hotel, sino todo Sotogrande”

En nuestro ‘Café con…’ conocemos mejor al actual director de guardia de SO/ Sotogrande, que cumple ya 24 años ininterrumpidos trabajando en la zona

Francisco Cuenca es sobradamente conocido por los asiduos visitantes de Sotogrande, donde este linense y “también orgulloso campogibraltareño” como él mismo se define lleva desarrollando toda su trayectoria profesional, vinculado a la hostelería y al turismo, y siempre en la empresa Sotogrande SA.

Comenzamos nuestro Café con nuestro protagonista precisamente en su destino actual, el SO/ Sotogrande, donde Francisco ejerce de director de guardia, trabajando codo con codo con el director del resort, Stephane Menou.

En Society, uno de los restaurantes del hotel cinco estrellas, Francisco nos cuenta sus inicios en Sotogrande. “La verdad es que fue una auténtica casualidad, porque realmente mi formación académica estaba relacionada con el deporte, que es mi gran pasión además de mi trabajo. Pero llegó el final de la carrera y, como muchos jóvenes, empecé a trabajar en el verano de 2001 en el Club del Playa El Cucurucho, y de eso hace ya 24 veranos. Vine a ganarme un poco de dinero para para después ver qué hacía con mi vida, y desde entonces no he dejado de trabajar y de crecer profesionalmente”.

De hecho, tras ese primer verano en el Cucurucho, Francisco nos cuenta como sólo dos años después en 2003, ya era director del club de playa que gestionaba entonces Sotogrande SA. “Obviamente siempre hay un componente de suerte, pero también de mucho trabajo. En cada sitio al que voy, en cada proyecto, siempre intento hacer las cosas lo mejor posible, algo que me inculcó mi padre desde pequeño. Creo que eso llamó la atención de algunos directivos y poco a poco me fueron ofreciendo más responsabilidad hasta que al tercer verano me surgió esta oportunidad con sólo 24 años”.

“Fue un salto muy grande, pero a base de esfuerzo y de mucha ayuda también por parte del Grupo sotogrande, que siempre han confiado en mí, fueron llegando más oportunidades”, nos cuenta Francisco. “Primero la dirección del club de playa, después del hotel Sotogrande (el actual Encinar), y el Almenara, del que también fui responsable de operaciones. Cuando ya nos quedamos sólo con este hotel, pude vivir su transformación en lo que hoy es el SO/ Sotogrande”.

“Estos 24 años han sido una experiencia inolvidable, por todo lo que tuve que aprender. Para mí es un gran orgullo llevar tanto tiempo trabajando aquí, donde también he visto y ayudado a crecer a mucha gente que hoy son grandísimos profesionales”, reconoce nuestro invitado, que actualmente ocupa el cargo de director de guardia en el resort. “Básicamente el director general y yo nos repartimos todo el horario del día para que siempre haya presente una figura de máxima responsabilidad ante cualquier incidente o urgencia”.

Para el buen funcionamiento del hotel, Francisco destaca al personal como pieza fundamental. “Gran parte del equipo que viene del antiguo hotel aportamos ese conocimiento de la zona y los clientes habituales, pero el equipo internacional que ha venido, comenzando por el propio director, Stephane Menou, aporta una visión diferente con toda su experiencia acumulada en otros países, y resulta una combinación muy interesante de la que aprendes a diario. En este sector el equipo es clave. La apuesta de Orión con su inversión en la reforma ha sido magnífica, pero el lujo también lo hacen las personas, el trato que recibe el cliente en el día a día”.

“En temporada alta podemos ser más de 200 trabajadores en el resort y siempre les digo que la imagen del hotel es cada uno de ellos, por eso para nosotros es fundamental que el equipo se sienta importante y valorado. Afortunadamente estamos en una empresa que es increíble”, añade Francisco, “y lo demostró incluso durante el periodo de la obra y de la pandemia. Con todas las incertidumbres que teníamos, el trato que recibimos los empleados  fue impecable, y es algo que no siempre ocurre en casos así”.

Desde entonces, todo el equipo del SO /Sotogrande se dedicó, tal y como nos comenta Francisco “a trabajar este nuevo proyecto con la ilusión de posicionar el hotel como un destino de referencia de máxima calidad, gracias al golf, a nuestras espectaculares instalaciones, a nuestra oferta gastronómica, y a todas las experiencias de ocio, deportivas y culturales que proponemos en cada temporada”.

Para ello, se sirven también de otras opciones en su entorno, porque “nos gusta decir que el resort no es sólo nuestro hotel, sino todo Sotogrande, y así se lo trasladamos a los clientes. Además de nuestras instalaciones aquí tenemos un puerto deportivo, más campos de golf, the Beach, un club de vela, nuestra costa.. es decir, intentamos que el cliente también salga del hotel para que disfrute de una experiencia completa en Sotogrande”.

De cara al futuro, destaca la nueva academia de golf que Sotogrande ya construye sobre el antiguo recorrido ‘Alcornoques’ de Almenara para convertirlo en un centro de formación de referencia. Un nuevo proyecto que llena de ilusión a nuestro protagonista. “Toda mi carrera profesional ha sido una sucesión de retos, también por eso he sido tan feliz aquí, sin tener que moverme de mi tierra”, nos asegura Francisco antes de concluir su Café con SGplus.

Francisco Cuenca: “The resort is not just our hotel, but the whole of Sotogrande”

In our ‘Coffee with…’ we get to learn more about SO/ Sotogrande’s current duty manager, who has been working in the area for 24 years continuously.

Francisco Cuenca is well known to regular visitors coming to Sotogrande, where this local from La Linea and ‘also proudly from Campo de Gibraltar’, as he defines himself, has been developing his entire professional career. He is linked to the hotel and tourism industry, and has always worked for the Sotogrande SA company.

We started our Coffee with our protagonist precisely in his current place of work, SO/ Sotogrande, where Francisco is the manager on duty, working side by side with the director of the resort, Stephane Menou.

At Society, one of the five-star hotel’s restaurants, Francisco tells us about his early days in Sotogrande. ‘The truth is that it was a real coincidence, because my academic training was actually related to sport, which is my great passion in addition to my work. But I finished my degree and, like many young people, I started working in the summer of 2001 at the El Cucurucho Beach Club, and that was 24 summers ago. I came to earn a bit of money to see what I could do with my life, and since then I haven’t stopped working and growing professionally’.

In fact, after that first summer at El Cucurucho, Francisco tells us how just two years later, in 2003, he was already director of the beach club that was then managed by Sotogrande SA. ‘Obviously there is always a component of luck, but also a lot of hard work. Everywhere I go, in every project, I always try to do the absolute best I can, something my father instilled in me since I was a child. I think that caught the attention of some managers and they gradually offered me more responsibility until I got the opportunity at the age of 24 during my third summer there’.

‘It was a big leap, but through hard work and a lot of help from the Sotogrande Group, who have always trusted me, more and more opportunities came my way,’ Francisco tells us. ‘First the management of the beach club, then the Sotogrande hotel (the current Encinar), and the Almenara, where I was also responsible for operations. When we were left with only this hotel, I was able to experience its transformation into what today has become SO/ Sotogrande’.

‘These 24 years have been an unforgettable experience, for all that I have had to learn. I am very proud to have been working here for so long, where I have also seen and helped many people grow up and today are great professionals,’ acknowledges our guest, who currently holds the position of duty manager at the resort. ‘Basically, the general manager and I divide up the day’s schedule so that there is always a figure with maximum responsibility for the case of any incident or emergency’.

To ensure the smooth running of the hotel, Francisco highlights the staff as a fundamental part. ‘A large part of the team that comes from the old hotel brings that knowledge of the area and the regular customers, but the international team that has joined us, starting with the director himself, Stephane Menou, brings a different vision based on his accumulated experience in other countries. It is a very interesting combination from which you learn on a daily basis. In this sector, the team is essential. Orion’s investment in the refurbishment has been magnificent, but luxury is also made by the people, the treatment the customer receives on a daily basis’.

‘During the high season there can be more than 200 workers throughout the resort and I always tell them that every single one of them represents the image of the hotel, so it’s essential for us that the team feels important and valued. Fortunately, we are at a company that is truly incredible,’ Francisco adds, ’and they proved it even during the construction period and the pandemic. With all the uncertainties we had, the treatment we received as employees was impeccable, which is something that doesn’t always happen in cases like this’.

Since then, the entire SO /Sotogrande team has dedicated itself, as Francisco tells us, ‘to working on this new project with the hope of positioning the hotel as a reference destination of the highest quality, thanks to golf, our spectacular facilities, our gastronomic offer, and all the leisure, sports and cultural experiences that we provide each season’.

To achieve this, they also make use of other options in the surrounding area, because ‘we like to say that the resort is not just our hotel, but the whole of Sotogrande, and that is how we convey this to our clients. In addition to our facilities here we also have a marina, more golf courses, the Beach, a sailing club, our coastline… in other words, we try to ensure that the client also leaves the hotel so that they can enjoy the complete experience of Sotogrande’.

With an eye on the future, the new golf academy that Sotogrande is already building on the old ‘Alcornoques’ course in Almenara to turn it into a training centre of reference stands out. A new project that fills our protagonist with enthusiasm. ‘My entire professional career has been a succession of challenges, which is also why I have been so happy here, without having to move from my homeland’, Francisco assures us shortly before finishing his Coffee with SGplus.
