Jaime Ravina: “Dirigir un club tan especial como La Cañada es un reto emocionante”

El nuevo director de La Cañada nos destaca en esta entrevista su ilusión por iniciar esta nueva etapa profesional en Andalucía

Bilbaíno de nacimiento, aunque criado en La Rioja y con sangre gaditana en las venas, Jaime Ravina afronta, desde mediados de marzo, la dirección del club de golf La Cañada tras haber forjado su experiencia en diferentes campos de golf del norte de la península y con las federaciones Riojana y Española de Golf.

– Bienvenido Jaime. ¿Cómo surge la llamada de La Cañada?
Siempre tuve en mente que en algún momento de mi vida tenía que acabar en el sur, sobre todo en esta zona. Mi hermano mayor vive actualmente en Algeciras, me enteré de que La Cañada estaba buscando un gestor y me dije “éste es el momento”. Por ubicación, por el club, y por el proyecto, vi una oportunidad idónea, presenté mi candidatura y aquí estamos, encantado de afrontar este reto tan emocionante y muy agradecido por esta oportunidad.

– Llegas con mucha experiencia en tu tierra natal pero también en la Federación…
Hace unos once años, tras finalizar mi licenciatura y trabajar en otros sectores, decidí que podía formarme en el golf y convertir mi afición en una actividad laboral. Comencé en mi tierra, La Rioja, también trabajé en Pamplona y colaboré con la Federación Española. Aún mantengo esa vinculación directa con todos los estamentos del golf para aprovecharnos como club de los eventos y experiencias que tiene la RFEG.

– Por tanto, tu caso se incluye dentro de esos amantes del golf que terminan trabajando en el sector.
Tengo la bendición y maldición de que mi hobby es mi trabajo. A veces quieres desconectar del día a día pero al final lo haces en tu propio centro de trabajo. Si surge cualquier problema, puedo atenderlo al momento porque, por una razón u otra, siempre estoy en el campo. Al ser un enamorado del golf, me encanta como deporte y por tanto me encanta mi trabajo.

– Terminas recayendo en un club con unas características muy singulares con respecto al resto de la zona
Eso también es un reto importante y que me motiva. La Cañada combina dos aspectos que parecen contrapuestos, pero que pueden conectar perfectamente. Es a la vez un campo de socios pero que tiene un núcleo comercial y externo muy importante y creo que hay mucho que aportar y mejorar para el cliente final, ya sea socio o jugador que venga a visitarnos.

– ¿Cómo ha sido la acogida?
Por parte de la junta y de los compañeros de trabajo ha sido sensacional y también he notado que ellos, tras un periodo de incertidumbre, necesitaban alguien que “cogiera el timón”. De sus cuatro años de etapa aún quedan tres y tenemos que estudiar y concretar las medidas a implementar para cumplir los objetivos de su proyecto.

Con los propios socios intento pasarme por el campo todos los días para saludar a quienes aún no me conocen para que la gente note esa cercanía. Que sepan que pueden charlar conmigo y vean que he venido para hacer lo mejor posible por todos los que quieran disfrutar de La Cañada.

– ¿Cómo te gustaría tener el club en uno o dos años?
La Cañada es un campo muy conocido en la zona y dentro del mundillo del golf, pero la enorme importancia que tiene no es tan conocida fuera de ese círculo. Sobre todo en estos primeros meses tenemos que trabajar en ese sentido, hacernos ver más y que la gente sepa no sólo lo magnífico de nuestras instalaciones, sino también lo magnífico de las medidas y actividades que se hacen aquí.

La Escuela Municipal de Golf es nuestro producto estrella, muy accesible para todos los públicos, y lo más reseñable es su escuela juvenil por la cantidad de buenos jugadores que han salido de ella, pero eso tenemos que mejorarlo y hacerlo más visible. Durante los últimos cuarenta años La Cañada ha sido referente de grandes nombres en el golf nacional. Hoy tenemos a Ángel Ayora, pero también hemos tenido a María Parra, Mario Galiano, o de una forma más notoria aún Álvaro Quirós o incluso el gran Juan Quirós, pero eso es lo más sencillo de ver por cualquiera.

Yo soy originario del mismo campo de golf de Jon Rham y le he visto crecer, pero no sólo debemos promover el golf porque tengamos al número uno. Muchos otros jugadores muy buenos son desconocidos por el público, así como la cantidad de practicantes que tiene este deporte o lo beneficioso que es en temas de salud o labores sociales como nuestra escuela adaptada.

– Lo de venirte al sur cuando ya se acerca el verano, tampoco es mala idea…
Para alguien que siempre ha vivido los inviernos y las primaveras en el norte, la diferencia es notable y mucho más apetecible (sonríe).

Jaime Ravina: «Managing such a special club as La Cañada is an exhilarating challenge».

The new manager of La Cañada highlights his excitement to start this new professional era in Andalusia with this interview.

Born in Bilbao, although raised in La Rioja and having Cádiz blood running through his veins, Jaime Ravina has been in charge of La Cañada Golf Club since mid-March, after having forged his experience in different golf courses in the north of the peninsula as well as with the Rioja and Spanish Golf Federations.

– Welcome Jaime, where did this calling for La Cañada originate?

I had always had in mind that at some point in my life I would end up in the south, especially in this area. My older brother currently lives in Algeciras, I heard that La Cañada was looking for a manager and I said to myself «this is the moment». I saw an ideal opportunity because of the location, the club, and the project, I presented my candidacy and here I am, delighted to take on this exciting challenge and very grateful for this opportunity.

– You bring a lot of experience from your homeland and also from the Federation…

About eleven years ago, after finishing my degree and working in other sectors, I decided that I would train in golf and turn my hobby into a job. I began in my hometown, La Rioja, I also worked in Pamplona and collaborated with the Spanish Federation. I still maintain that direct link with all the golfing institutions so that we as a club can take advantage of the events and experiences that the RFEG has.

– So, you are among those golf lovers who end up working in the sector.

I have the blessing and curse that my hobby is my job. Sometimes you want to disconnect from the day to day but in the end you do it in your own workplace. If any problem arises, I can deal with it on the spot because, for one reason or another, I am always on the course. As a golf lover, I love golf as a sport and therefore I love my job.

-You ended up at a club that has some very unique characteristics compared to the rest of the area.

That is also an important challenge and one that motivates me. La Cañada combines two aspects that seem opposed, but that can be perfectly connected. It is both a members’ course, but it also has a very important commercial and external focus and I think there is a lot to contribute and improve upon for the end customer, whether they are members of the club or players who came to visit us.

– How has your welcome been?

It has been sensational on the part of the board and co-workers, and I have also noticed that, after a period of uncertainty, they needed someone to «take the helm». There are still three years left of its four-year term and we have to study and specify the measures to be implemented in order to meet the objectives of the project.

I try to go round the camp every day with the members themselves and greet those who don’t know me yet so that people feel that I am close to them. I want them to know that they can talk to me and see that I have joined the club to do the best I can for all those who want to enjoy La Cañada.

– How would you like to see the club in the next year or two?

La Cañada is a very well-known course in the area and within the golfing world, but its enormous importance is not so well known outside that circle. Especially in these first few months we have to work on this, to make ourselves more visible and let people know not only how magnificent our facilities are, but also how fantastic the activities and events that take place here are.

The Municipal Golf School is our star product, very accessible to the general public, and the most remarkable thing is its youth school due to the number of great players that have emerged from it, yet we have to improve it and increase its visibility. For the last forty years La Cañada has been a reference point for great names in national golf. Today we can boast about Ángel Ayora, but we have also had María Parra, Mario Galiano, or in a still more notorious manner Álvaro Quirós or even the great Juan Quirós, but that is the easiest thing for anyone to see.

I am originally a native of the same golf course as Jon Rham and I have seen him develop, but we should not only promote golf because we have the number one player. Many other very good players are unknown to the public, as well as the number of people who play the sport or how beneficial it is in terms of health or social work with our special adapted school.

– Coming to the south as summer is approaching is not a bad idea either…

For someone who has always lived the winters and springs in the north, the difference is noticeable and much more appealing (smiles).
