Reading as the basis for the development of children

Encouraging the love of reading is one of the best gifts we can bestow on our children. Books open up the possibility of multiple experiences, adventures, and learning, stimulate the imagination, creativity and develop writing skills.

On the other hand, reading comprehension is the basis of knowledge and therefore reading is a prerequisite for academic success.

Nowadays, due to the many distractions, this is not an easy task and requires an effort from families and educators because, of course, role modelling is one of the main ways in which behaviour is learned during childhood.  Television or other audio-visual media should not displace books, they are just another factor, but encouraging our children or students towards a love of written narration will help them in many areas of their lives. Reading should not be imposed but facilitated; it is the task of those who share responsibility for the training and education of children.

    Some ideas that may help:

Create reading areas with age-appropriate books. At first there should be more pictures and less text and then gradually the difficulty of the text should increase as the child acquires reading skills. Libraries in classrooms, reading corners at home, and books on different subjects help children to love and spend time reading.

If we establish reading as a daily activity, it will become a habit. If, as adults, we share these moments with them as well as reading our own books, we will make them want to share theirs with us. If we manage to establish a natural, non-evaluative interest in the reading they are doing, asking them questions, commenting on certain passages, … they will experience it as a positive activity, thus increasing the likelihood that they will want to continue repeating it until it becomes a habit. These moments have to be relaxed periods, not rushed, nor should they be spent after numerous activities that have caused the child to become overtired.

Visit libraries or specialised bookshops and look for books on topics that interest the child, attend storytelling sessions, book fairs, etc., and if this is done in the company of family or other friends, all the better as they will associate it with a feeling of wellbeing.

Reading is a fundamental instrument in the integral formation of the person. Through it, the individual is able to develop their cognitive, affective, social, moral, emotional, and creative potential that will help them develop overall towards being freer, as well as preparing them for later life. In the search for this path of personal development, children should not be alone; this task is the responsibility of families, educators, and society in general, given that the better educated individuals are, the better and freer the societies they form will be.

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one. (George RR Martin).
