La retirada del OS35 se realizará el 16 de junio
El Gobierno de Gibraltar ya tiene una fecha definitiva para la retirada del buque hundido frente al Peñón desde finales de agosto de 2022
Los efectos de uno de los accidentes marítimos más importantes en el Campo de Gibraltar en los últimos años, el hundimiento del buque granelero OS35, están llegando a su recta final. Tras su accidente frente al margen oeste del Peñón el pasado 29 de agosto, y los vertidos de hidrocarburos que ha provocado en estos meses sobre las playas de Gibraltar y La Línea, llega por fin el último tramo de los preparativos para su retirada.
El Capitán Marítimo del Puerto de Gibraltar, John Ghio, ha confirmado el calendario definitivo, fijando la retirada de los restos del barco sobre el próximo 16 de junio. El proceso implica varias operaciones complejas desde las últimas semanas de mayo.
En primer lugar, se garantizará la estanqueidad de la proa y la popa con un equipo de buzos experimentados que sellarán y probarán los compartimentos estancos que aligerarán la carga a levantar. A continuación, se sacará a flote el barco, restableciendo su flotabilidad por secciones, primero la parte de popa y a continuación la sección delantera, con la ayuda de barcazas semisumergibles.
Una vez despejado el fondo marino, se pasarán cadenas adicionales bajo el casco para reforzar la estabilidad del izado del barco. Estas fases de la operación son las que conllevan el mayor riesgo de vertido de residuos de petróleo que, en cantidad desconocida, aún siguen atrapados en el casco y podrían filtrarse durante el reflotamiento.
Definidos los planes de respuesta ante posibles vertidos
La Autoridad Portuaria de Gibraltar está colaborando con la empresa Koole y el Departamento de Medio Ambiente para ultimar planes de respuesta ante posibles vertidos durante estas operaciones. Para ello, se colocarán barreras de contención alrededor de cada una de las secciones del pecio y también se prevén barreras preventivas en Catalan Bay, Sandy Bay y en Eastside. Además, el Departamento de Medio Ambiente reforzará las patrullas en tierra y mar durante el reflotamiento.

Removal of the OS35 will take place on the 16th of June
The Government of Gibraltar has now set a definitive date for the removal of the sunken vessel off the Rock as of the end of August 2022.
The consequences of one of the most important maritime accidents in the Campo de Gibraltar in recent years, the sinking of the bulk carrier OS35, are coming to an end. After its accident off the west side of the Rock on the 29th of August, and the oil spills that it caused in recent months on the beaches of Gibraltar and La Linea, the last stage of the preparations for its removal is finally coming to an end.
The Maritime Captain of the Port of Gibraltar, John Ghio, has confirmed the definitive schedule, setting the removal of the remains of the ship for the 16th of June. The process involves several complex operations starting in the last few weeks of May.
First, the bow and stern will be made watertight by a team of experienced divers who will seal and test the watertight compartments that will lighten the load to be lifted. The ship will then be resurfaced, restoring its buoyancy section by section. The stern section first, followed by the forward section, will be lifted out with the help of semi-submersible barges.
Once the seabed has been cleared, additional chains will be passed under the hull to reinforce the stability of the ship’s lifting. These phases of the operation carry the greatest risk of spillage of oil residues which are still trapped in the hull in unknown quantities and could leak out during the resurface.
Spill response plans in place
The Gibraltar Port Authority is working with Koole Corporation and the Environment Department to finalise response plans for possible spills during these operations. To this end, containment booms will be placed around each of the wreck sections and preventive booms are also planned to be placed in Catalan Bay, Sandy Bay and Eastside. In addition, the Environment Department will reinforce patrols on land and at sea during the resurface.
