La Feria Internacional de Turismo abre sus puertas de nuevo en Madrid, como muestra e inauguración de la temporada. Un banderazo de salida del año turístico que, si no se tuerce, será otro récord de visitantes y divisas
Y aquí estamos, en paz y concordia, en el Campo de Gibraltar, con nuestros problemas, pero con mucho que ofrecer: clima, paisaje, historia, cultura, …. , se podría hacer un inventario, pero no cabe en este artículo, y de todos es conocido.
Hablemos de las carencias, también conocidas, pero que conviene recordar. Para mí y para casi todos, el ferrocarril decimonónico y muy limitado que aun tenemos. No pretendo un AVE, pero si un tren decente, moderno, con mas frecuencia, que nos conecte con el resto de Europa, y dé salida al enorme potencial industrial y comercial de la bahía.
Y el uso conjunto del aeropuerto de Gibraltar, y el desdoblamiento de la carretera a Tarifa y Cádiz. En fin, asignaturas pendientes que algún día llegarán, pero que lastran nuestro potencial. Mientras, se debe aprovechar al máximo lo que hay.
Ahora llega mi crítica, a los responsables políticos, a los de aquí y a la Junta de Andalucía: está agotada la infraestructura de alojamientos. No hay suficientes hoteles y apartamentos en muchas localidades de la comarca. Tarifa está desbordada, Castellar y Jimena apenas tienen recursos. La Línea, con un potencial enorme, aún no tiene aprobado su Plan general (PGOU) que debería poner en valor sus playas larguísimas y sus atractivos, y San Roque, la «joya» de la corona, es un laberinto burocrático e ineficaz que no sabe complementar el inmenso potencial y la marca Sotogrande. Es más, parece que se castiga una zona del municipio que quiere crecer y desarrollar la riqueza que genera el polo y el golf.
Pregunten a los empresarios acerca de lo que perciben y sufren cuando se acercan a la administración municipal para plantear algún proyecto. La normativa, las reglas de juego ininteligibles, la lentitud, los caprichos y la prepotencia, son las características de lo que tenemos.
Alcalde, haz algo, que tienes la mayoría absoluta que te hemos dado.

The International Tourism Fair opens its exhibition doors once again in Madrid, as a showcase and an inauguration of the season. It is the starting signal for the tourist year which, if everything goes according to plan, will set another visitor and foreign exchange record.
And here we are, in peace and harmony, in the Campo de Gibraltar, and despite our problems we have a lot to offer: weather, landscape, history, culture…. one could list them all, but there is no room for that in this article, and everyone is familiar with what we have to offer.
Let’s talk about the shortcomings, which are also well known, but which should be remembered. For me and for almost everyone else, it is the nineteenth-century and very limited railway that we still have. I do not demand an AVE, but a decent, modern train, with more frequency, that connects us with the rest of Europe, and provides an outlet for the enormous industrial and commercial potential of the region.
As well as the shared use of the Gibraltar airport, and the widening of the road to Tarifa and Cádiz. In short, unfinished business that will someday be completed, but which hinder our potential. In the meantime, we must make the most of what we have.
Now I would like to criticise the politicians, those in charge here and at the Junta de Andalucía: the lodging infrastructure is depleted. There are not enough hotels and flats in many towns and villages in the region. Tarifa is overflowing, Castellar and Jimena have hardly any resources. La Linea, with enormous potential, still has not approved its General Plan (PGOU) which should enhance its long beaches and attractions, and San Roque, the ‘crown jewel’, is a bureaucratic and inefficient labyrinth that does not fulfil its immense potential and the Sotogrande brand. What’s more, it seems to be punishing an area of the municipality that wants to grow and develop the wealth generated by polo and golf.
Ask entrepreneurs about what they perceive and suffer when they approach the municipal administration with a project. Regulations, unintelligible ground rules, sluggishness, fickleness, and arrogance are the hallmarks of what we have.
Mayor, do something, you have the absolute majority we have given you.
