Gracias a las acogidas temporales, la perrera de Los Barrios logra salvar a los perros cada vez que el refugio se inunda
La borrasca Nelson dejó estragos en toda España, una Semana Santa pasada por agua como hacía mucho que no se recordaba. Muy atentos a las predicciones meteorológicas andaban esos días los voluntarios de la Fundación SOS CANYA de la perrera de Los Barrios, que tuvieron que ir en plena madrugada al rescate de los perros más pequeños y así evitar el peor de los finales para estos indefensos: morir ahogados. Afortunadamente, no hubo que lamentar ninguna pérdida gracias a un terreno aledaño de más altura, pero esta situación era estrictamente temporal. Estos perros necesitaban familias de acogida temporal.
Desde el refugio, nos cuentan que en el momento que explicaron la situación por redes sociales la gente mostró gran empatía, sin embargo, de la avalancha de ofrecimientos para acoger a estos animales hay que hacer un filtro.
Durante el proceso debe haber una comunicación fluida entre el posible hogar de acogida y los responsables de la organización. Y es que, aunque la acogida sea temporal, no cualquier familia es la idónea para un determinado perro, ni cualquier perro es apto para una determinada familia.
En este proceso, la persona interesada expresa sus preferencias, los ejemplares más solicitados son las hembras amigables y pequeñas (en torno a los 10 kilos). Pero también es importante saber qué pueden ofrecer ellos. El cariño y el calor de un hogar se dan por supuesto, pero en un piso pequeño un mastín, por ejemplo, podría estar un par de días, no más. A la hora de hacer el “match” perfecto, se atiende al tipo de vivienda o si se cuenta con un patio o jardín, pero también al estilo de familia. Si se tienen bebés o niños pequeños, gatos u otros perros podría ser un problema si no se escoge al can idóneo.
En otras ocasiones, es el propio desconocimiento sobre estos animales lo que es un problema, por ello los voluntarios de la perrera también resuelven todo tipo de dudas mediante grupos de mensajería instantánea. Sin embargo, la actuación de los voluntarios a veces tiene que ir incluso más allá. Esto fue lo que le ocurrió a un pequeño cruce de border collie con bodeguero que estaba siendo acogido en Tarifa; lo soltaron y debido al carácter nervioso del animal acabó perdido. Los voluntarios no dudaron en salir a buscarlo durante horas hasta que dieron con él. A día de hoy, el animal se encuentra a salvo con Amanda, responsable del refugio.
Este proceso de búsqueda perro-familia de acogida ideal puede parecer tedioso pero es la única forma de asegurar el bienestar del animal y la satisfacción de la familia. Tan importante es esta primera fase que hacen los voluntarios, que en ocasiones la persona que acoge, termina adoptando al perro de manera definitiva. Este es el caso de un podenco y un bodeguero. Casos en los que se acoge a un perro por unos días y acabas teniendo un amigo para siempre.
Desde la perrera nos recuerdan que las acogidas son muy importantes durante todo el año y no únicamente cuando sufren las consecuencias de la lluvia. Cuando hay perras preñadas o envíos que se hacen al extranjero son situaciones en las que puede ser muy útil tener al animal en acogida aunque se trate de un par de días. A día de hoy unos cien perros están en acogida, y en el refugio se muestran profundamente agradecidos. Entienden que por circunstancias personales no todo el mundo puede adoptar y ponen en gran valor la acogida temporal, no solo por la propia subsistencia del refugio, sino también para tener más información sobre el animal: su conducta en la casa, cómo se relaciona con otros perros, su carácter, sus gustos etc.
Mirando al futuro, desde el refugio se muestran más impacientes que esperanzadores. Sin fecha aún para el traslado al nuevo espacio, son ya tres inviernos los que llevan sufriendo las inundaciones que junto con las subidas del río tienen consecuencias fatales.
Mientras tanto, la incansable labor de los voluntarios y las acogidas temporales le dan un respiro al refugio. Gracias a la solidaridad de personas que no solo abren las puertas de su hogar durante un tiempo a pelos, babas y ladridos sino que llenan su vida de una amor incondicional. Y eso no es temporal.

Foster care, lifelong love
The Los Barrios kennel manages to save dogs every time the shelter is flooded thanks to fostering.
The Nelson storm wreaked havoc all over Spain, a wet Easter week like never before in living memory. The volunteers of the SOS CANYA Foundation of the Los Barrios kennel were very attentive to the weather forecasts and had to go in the early hours of the morning to rescue the smallest dogs in order to avoid the worst possible end for these defenceless animals: drowning. Fortunately, no losses were reported thanks to a nearby plot of higher ground, but this situation was strictly temporary. These dogs needed temporary foster families.
From the shelter, they told us that when they explained the situation on social networks, people showed great empathy, however, the avalanche of offers to take in these animals must be filtered out.
During the process there must be fluid communication between the potential foster home and those responsible for the organisation. Even if the fostering is temporary, not just any family is suitable for a particular dog, and not just any dog is suitable for a particular family.
During the process, the person interested expresses their preferences, the most requested animals are friendly and small females (around 10 kilos). However it is also important to know what they have to offer. The affection and warmth of a home are self-evident, but a mastiff, for example, could stay in a small flat for only a couple of days, no more. When it comes to finding the perfect match, it is important to take into account the type of house and whether there is a yard or garden, as well as the style of the family. If there are babies or small children, cats or other dogs, it could be a problem if the right dog is not chosen.
On other occasions, it is the lack of knowledge about these animals that is a problem, which is why the kennel volunteers also resolve all kinds of doubts through instant messaging groups. However, the volunteers’ actions sometimes have to go even further. This is what happened to a small border collie and bodeguero cross that was being fostered in Tarifa; they let him loose and due to the animal’s nervous nature he ended up getting lost. The volunteers did not hesitate to go out and look for him for hours until they found him. Today, the animal is safe with Amanda, who is in charge of the shelter.
The process of searching for the ideal foster dog-family may seem tedious but it is the only way to ensure the welfare of the animal and the satisfaction of the family. This first phase of the volunteers’ work is so important that sometimes the person who takes in the dog ends up adopting it definitively. This was the case for a podenco and a bodeguero. Cases in which you take in a dog for a few days and end up having a friend forever.
The kennels remind us that fostering is very important throughout the year and not only when they suffer the consequences of the rain. When there are pregnant dogs or when they are sent abroad, these are situations in which it can be very useful to have the animal in foster care, even if it is only for a couple of days. At the moment there are about 100 dogs in foster care, and the shelter is deeply grateful. They understand that due to personal circumstances not everyone can adopt and they place great value on fostering temporarily, not only for the shelter’s own subsistence, but also to obtain more information about the animal: its behaviour in the home, how it interacts with other dogs, its character, its likes and dislikes, etc.
As they look to the future, the shelter is more impatient than hopeful. With no date yet for the relocation to the new space, they have been suffering for three winters now from the floods which, together with the rise of the river, have had fatal consequences.
In the meantime, the tireless work of the volunteers and the fostering of animals is giving the shelter some respite. Thanks to the solidarity of people who not only open the doors of their home for a while to dogs, drooling and barking, but also fill their lives with unconditional love. Which is not temporary.
