El defensor del título, de nuevo en el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, donde consiguió la medalla de bronce por equipos en la Copa Sotogrande de 2011

Doce años después de disputar la Copa Sotogrande encuadrado en un equipo español de lujo que se enfrentaba a la plana mayor del golf amateur europeo (muchos de cuyos miembros ya cuentan con notables éxitos profesionales), Adrián Otaegui regresa al Real Club de Golf Sotogrande con una vitola única: la de campeón defensor del título del Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters. El donostiarra, en una temporada más que notable, llega al recorrido gaditano al frente de la escuadra española y con ganas de reeditar un título muy especial del 19 al 22 de octubre.

“Cada victoria tiene su historia y su momento, pero sí es verdad que el triunfo del año pasado en el Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters tuvo un sabor especial: mi primera victoria en España, delante del público español, en uno de los sitios que más cariño tengo. Fue la primera victoria con mis padres en el campo, compartiendo toda la semana con ellos, con mucha gente de San Sebastián. Una victoria muy bonita en una semana en que salió todo redondo. Inolvidable”, rememora Otaegui.

Aunque lleva tiempo sin jugar el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Otaegui conserva un gran recuerdo del recorrido en el que consiguió la medalla de bronce por equipos en aquella Copa Sotogrande de 2011. La zona de Sotogrande es muy especial para el vasco, y un nuevo triunfo refrendaría esa gran relación que tiene con este rincón de la geografía andaluza.

“Me acuerdo perfectamente de la Copa Sotogrande que jugamos en 2011. Recuerdo la fama y el prestigio que tiene ese torneo, y todos los jugadores de Europa querían jugarlo. Es un campo que me encanta, siempre está muy bien cuidado, exigente, con greenes rápidos y con viento se puede complicar mucho la cosa. Seguro que hay vueltas buenas si tienes el juego a punto, pero te puedes liar. Es un campo que me puede ir bien, aunque hay hoyos que no conozco después de los cambios. Estoy impaciente por jugar la vuelta de prácticas. Tengo magníficos recuerdos de la zona de Sotogrande, de ir de adolescente con 14 o 15 años cuando podía, en invierno, a entrenar con viento y con una hierba diferente a la que tenemos en el norte. Es una zona a la que le tengo mucho cariño”, explica el jugador vasco.

La historia impregna la carrera de Adrián Otaegui y no solo por su paso por la Copa Sotogrande: ganador del British Boys como otro astro donostiarra, José María Olazábal, también se estrenó en un torneo del DP World Tour, el Iberdrola Open de 2011, en una fecha muy señalada.

“Fue justo la semana después de fallecer Severiano Ballesteros y fue diferente y emotivo. Ese mismo año después de jugar el Campeonato de Europa con el equipo de la RFEG me hice profesional, bastante joven. La idea era ir cogiendo experiencia para aprender el oficio. Fue acertado por mi parte, porque siempre he tenido claro que quería dedicarme a esto y me siento un privilegiado por poder dedicarme a lo que me gusta, a mi pasión, a lo que siempre he querido”, indica Otaegui.

A lo largo de sus doce años de carrera profesional, Adrián Otaegui ha sabido madurar y sacarle jugo a todo su esfuerzo, superando las dificultades iniciales y aprovechando el camino para aprender a ganar y, sobre todo, a vivir. Con cuatro títulos del DP World Tour ya en su haber, el futuro sigue rebosando posibilidades.

“El mundo profesional de élite es distinto a lo que te imaginas de chaval. He tenido la suerte de jugar un montón de torneos por todo el mundo, en diferentes campos, con diferentes culturas, en distintos continentes y circuitos. He jugado todos los majors menos el Masters, que es el único que me queda, y la experiencia ha sido magnífica. En cuanto a lo deportivo, me encanta la competición y los retos a los que te enfrentas cada día en un campo de golf. Es cuestión de superación, de resolver problemas que te vienen poco a poco, como en la vida”, describe el golfista español.

De momento, tiene ante sí revalidar el primer título que lograba en suelo español, y para ello encabezará a un notable plantel de jugadores españoles entre los que también figuran, entre otros, Pablo Larrazábal, ganador del Korea Championship y del KLM Open este año, Jorge Campillo, campeón del Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa, Nacho Elvira, Adri Arnaus o Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Twelve years after playing the Sotogrande Cup in a superb Spanish team that faced the best European amateur golfers (many of whom already with notable professional careers), Adrian Otaegui returns to Real Club de Golf Sotogrande as the defending champion of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters. The player from San Sebastian, in a more than remarkable season, arrives at the Cadiz course heading the Spanish squad and eager to fight again for a very special title from October 19-22.

“Every victory has its history and its moment, but it is true that last year’s win at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters had a special flavor: my first victory in Spain, in front of the Spanish public, in one of the places I love the most. It was the first title with my parents on the course, sharing the whole week with me, with many people from San Sebastian. It was a very nice victory in a week in which everything went well. Unforgettable,” recalled Otaegui.

Although it’s been a while since the last time he played the Real Club de Golf, Otaegui has great memories of the course where he won the team bronze medal in the Sotogrande Cup in 2011. The Sotogrande area is very special for the Basque, and a new triumph would endorse the great relationship he has with this corner of the Andalusian geography.

“I remember perfectly the Sotogrande Cup we played in 2011. The event carries such fame and prestige that all the players in Europe wanted to play it. It is a course that I love, it is always very well maintained, demanding, with fast greens and when the wind blows it can be very hard. I’m sure there will be good rounds if you have your game ready, but you can suffer as well. It’s a course that suits me, although there are holes I don’t know after the renewal. I can’t wait to play the practice round. I have great memories of the Sotogrande area, of going as a teenager with 14 or 15 years when I could, in winter, to train with wind and with a different grass to the one we have in the north. It is an area I am very fond of,” exlpained the Basque player.

History permeates Adrián Otaegui’s career and not only because of his time at the Sotogrande Cup: winner of the British Boys like another star from San Sebastian, José María Olazábal, he also made his debut in a DP World Tour tournament, the Iberdrola Open in 2011, on a very special date.

“It was just the week after Severiano Ballesteros passed away and it was different and emotional. That same year, after playing the European Championship with the RFEG team, I turned pro, quite young. The idea was to gain experience to learn the trade. I think it was the right decision because I knew for sure that I wanted to devote my life to golf and I feel privileged to be able to dedicate myself to what I like, to my passion, to what I have always wanted,” said Otaegui.

Throughout his twelve-year professional career, Adrián Otaegui has been able to mature and make the most of all his efforts, overcoming the initial difficulties and taking advantage of the road to learn how to win and, above all, how to live. With four DP World Tour titles already under his belt, the future is still brimming with possibilities.

“The elite professional world is different from what you imagine as a kid. I’ve been lucky enough to play a lot of tournaments all over the world, in different courses, with different cultures, on different continents and tour. I have played all the majors except the Masters, and the experience has been magnificent. I love the competition and the challenges you face every day on a golf course. It is a matter of overcoming, of solving problems that come to you little by little, as in life,” said the Spanish golfer.
