La presidenta del Club de Golf La Cañada afronta un nuevo mandato tras unas elecciones muy participativas y pone el foco en el centro de tecnificación, la cantera y mantener el carácter social y accesible del club

Recién renovada como presidenta del Club de Golf La Cañada tras unas elecciones muy ajustadas y con una participación récord, Ana Vega afronta cuatro nuevos años al frente de una de las entidades deportivas más emblemáticas del Campo de Gibraltar. Con serenidad, pero también con ambición, habla de los retos inmediatos del club: el esperado centro de tecnificación, la mejora de los servicios, la cantera y la necesidad de preservar la esencia social de La Cañada.

Después de unas elecciones tan intensas y ajustadas, ¿cómo han sido estas primeras semanas tras renovar el mandato?

La verdad es que estamos muy contentos. Sobre todo porque tenemos la oportunidad de seguir otros cuatro años más trabajando en la misma línea de estos últimos años. Había proyectos importantes que se quedaron pendientes y ahora queremos terminarlos.

¿Cuál es la prioridad inmediata?

Ahora mismo, lo primero es encontrar gerente, porque es una figura fundamental para el club. Y después seguir avanzando con los proyectos pendientes. El principal es el centro de tecnificación, que para nosotros ya es una necesidad urgente.

¿Por qué es tan importante ese centro?

Porque la escuela está creciendo muchísimo y cada vez tenemos más nivel. Contamos con profesionales muy cualificados, pero hoy en día el golf avanza muy rápido y necesitamos instalaciones y equipamiento adecuados para ofrecer a los niños la formación que merecen.

P.- Estas elecciones han tenido una participación altísima. ¿Cómo se vive un proceso así en un club tan familiar como La Cañada?

La verdad es que el ambiente fue magnífico. Aquí nos conocemos prácticamente todos y la gente vino a votar con muchísima ilusión. Han participado más de quinientos socios, algo muy positivo porque demuestra que el socio siente el club como suyo y quiere implicarse en las decisiones.

El resultado ajustado también deja una lectura interesante: hay mucha gente preparada e implicada en el futuro del club.

Por supuesto. Hay gente muy cualificada y además mucha gente joven, que para mí es una de las mejores noticias de estas elecciones. Me sorprendió muchísimo la cantidad de jóvenes que vinieron a votar. Eso demuestra que La Cañada sigue siendo un club vivo y que hay relevo generacional.

Y en ese futuro, ¿qué es lo que no debe perder nunca La Cañada?

Su esencia. La Cañada tiene que seguir siendo un club accesible, donde cualquier persona pueda jugar al golf independientemente de su situación económica. Esa es nuestra identidad. Aquí las cuotas están pensadas para que todo el mundo pueda ser socio. Y por eso también son tan importantes los green fees, porque ayudan a mantener el equilibrio económico necesario para sostener el campo y las instalaciones.

Una de las novedades será recuperar la figura del director de golf o director de escuela.

Sí. Queremos retomar esa figura para mejorar la comunicación entre la escuela, la gerencia y la directiva. Creemos que es muy importante para coordinar mejor todo el trabajo de cantera.

Hablando de cantera, La Cañada sigue produciendo jugadores de muchísimo nivel.

Sí, tenemos niños y niñas buenísimos. Los chicos que están ahora mismo en la fundación tienen muchísimo talento y muchos son de aquí, formados en La Cañada desde pequeños. Ahí están nombres como Pedro Tineo, Sofía o Nica, entre otros.

Una de las grandes novedades para vuestra cantera ha sido la colaboración con la Fundación Valderrama…

Fundamental. Estamos encantados con que varios de nuestros alumnos hayan recibido la beca de la Fundación, en la que también participa el Colegio Internacional. Combinar estudios y golf con entidades de tanto prestigio es una oportunidad enorme para ellos. Por eso insisto tanto por nuestra parte con el centro de tecnificación. Todo está relacionado y para nuestra cantera es una pieza muy importante para seguir creciendo.

Y además desde la Cañada mantenéis ese proyecto tan especial de golf adaptado.

Ese es uno de los proyectos con más corazón del club. Los miércoles vienen asociaciones y es emocionante ver cómo disfrutan. Cuando llega el final de curso les organizamos actividades y una comida. Son momentos muy especiales.

El crecimiento del golf femenino también es evidente en La Cañada.

Muchísimo. Cada vez hay más mujeres jugando y compitiendo. Y además muchas son jóvenes. Eso también es muy positivo para el futuro del club.

Y personalmente, dentro de cuatro años, cuando termine este mandato, ¿cómo te gustaría mirar atrás?

Me gustaría ver el centro de tecnificación terminado y funcionando, con los niños disfrutando de todas esas ventajas. Y también seguir viendo un club unido, vivo y disfrutando del golf como hasta ahora.

With a blend of composure and ambition, she discusses the club’s immediate challenges: the long-awaited high-performance center, service improvements, the youth academy, and the vital need to preserve La Cañada’s social essence.

After such intense and close elections, how have these first few weeks of your new mandate been? To be honest, we are very happy. Above all, we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue the work we’ve done over the past few years for another four-year term. There were significant projects left pending, and now we want to see them through.

What is your immediate priority? Right now, the first step is finding a general manager, as that is a fundamental role for the club. After that, we’ll continue moving forward with pending projects. The main one is the high-performance center, which has become an urgent necessity for us.

Why is that center so important? Because the academy is growing tremendously and the level of play is rising. We have highly qualified professionals, but golf is evolving rapidly today. We need the proper facilities and equipment to give the children the training they deserve.

These elections saw a very high turnout. How do you experience such a process in a club as close-knit as La Cañada? The atmosphere was actually magnificent. We practically all know each other here, and people showed up to vote with great enthusiasm. Over five hundred members participated, which is very positive because it shows that the members feel the club belongs to them and want to be involved in the decision-making.

The narrow result also suggests an interesting takeaway: there are many people ready and willing to be involved in the club’s future. Absolutely. There are highly qualified individuals and, notably, many young people, which for me is some of the best news to come out of these elections. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of young members who came to vote. It proves that La Cañada remains a vibrant club with a clear generational handover in progress.

Looking toward that future, what must La Cañada never lose?

Its essence. La Cañada must remain an accessible club where anyone can play golf regardless of their financial situation. That is our identity. Here, the fees are designed so that everyone can be a member. Because of that, green fees are also vital, as they help maintain the economic balance necessary to sustain the course and the facilities.

One of the new developments will be bringing back the role of Golf Director or Head of the Academy.

Yes. We want to reintroduce that role to improve communication between the academy, management, and the board. We believe it’s very important for better coordination of all our youth development work.

Speaking of youth development, La Cañada continues to produce very high-level players.

Yes, we have some incredibly talented boys and girls. The kids currently in the foundation have immense talent, and many are locals who have been trained at La Cañada since they were little. There are names like Pedro Tineo, Sofía, and Nica, among others.

One of the major milestones for your youth system has been the collaboration with the Valderrama Foundation…

It’s fundamental. We are delighted that several of our students have received scholarships from the Foundation, which also involves the International School. Combining studies and golf with such prestigious entities is a massive opportunity for them. That’s why I’m so insistent on the high-performance center. Everything is connected, and for our young players, it is a crucial piece for their continued growth.

Additionally, La Cañada maintains that very special adapted golf project.

That is one of the projects with the most heart in the club. Every Wednesday, various associations come by, and it’s moving to see how much they enjoy it. When the end of the course arrives, we organize activities and a meal for them. They are very special moments.

The growth of women’s golf is also evident at La Cañada.Immensely so. More and more women are playing and competing, and many of them are young. That is also very positive for the future of the club.

On a personal level, four years from now when this term ends, how would you like to look back?

I would like to see the high-performance center finished and fully operational, with the children enjoying all those advantages. And also, to continue seeing a club that is united, vibrant, and enjoying golf just as it is now.
