El segundo año del Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters en el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ya se contaba como una ocasión especial al ser la décima edición del torneo, a la que además, se le fueron añadiendo más ingredientes para aumentar su atractivo de cara a cualquier aficionado al golf mundial.
Su ubicación en el tramo final de la temporada del DP World Tour aseguraba la presencia de máximas figuras en busca de su clasificación para la fase final en Dubai. Pero sin duda, el colofón lo dio la confirmación de que Jon Rahm acudiría al RCG Sotogrande, en el que compitió en su etapa amateur, semanas después de haber participado en el Open de España, donde finalizó segundo tras desempatar con el joven marbellí Ángel Hidalgo.
Rahm e Hidalgo: la rivalidad que marcó el inicio del torneo
Precisamente, el emparejamiento de ambos españoles, uno ya consagrado como máxima figura mundial frente al joven aspirante que acababa de alcanzar el éxito en Madrid, fue el gran atractivo de las dos primeras jornadas del torneo.
Desde el primer día, las miradas estuvieron puestas en este duelo que reeditaba el desempate del Open de España, pero ante los 18 hoyos del espectacular recorrido diseñado por Robert Trent Jones en Sotogrande.
Aficionados locales e internacionales no quisieron perderse este emparejamiento, acompañando al de Barrika y al marbellí durante todo el recorrido por el RCG Sotogrande. Hidalgo, decidido a aprovechar la cercanía de su tierra natal para dar espectáculo, no defraudó en la primera jornada, manteniendo un emocionante duelo con un Rahm que buscaba su mejor ritmo.
Y aunque a medida que avanzaba el torneo, ambos comenzaron a descolgarse de la lucha por el título, la conocida habilidad de Jon Rahm para sobreponerse a comienzos complicados le llevó a protagonizar una increíble remontada en la última jornada que hizo vibrar al público. Con cuatro birdies y dos impresionantes eagles, terminó firmando una tarjeta de -17, demostrando en esa última vuelta al RCG Sotogrande por qué está considerado como uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo.
Un desenlace para la historia: Guerrier vs. Campillo
Sin embargo, el verdadero clímax del torneo llegó con el enfrentamiento entre Julien Guerrier y Jorge Campillo. El francés, que alternó jornadas espectaculares con un par del campo, fue más irregular ante la constancia del español, que lideró buena parte de la competición. Aun así, ambos llegaron empatados a -21 tras su último hoyo 18.
A partir de ahí, surgió lo inesperado. Un maratónico desempate que dejó sin aliento tanto a jugadores como a espectadores y que ya se considera como uno de los más memorables en la historia del DP World Tour.
Nueve hoyos de playoff en un duelo tan épico como agónico, con ambos golfistas ejecutando putts imposibles y salidas impecables desde el bunker para el delirio de los asistentes. Un público que, tras la victoria final de Guerrier, reconoció tanto al campeón como a Campillo por haberles brindado uno de los finales más emocionantes que se recuerdan en las últimas décadas del golf mundial.
Un escenario único para un torneo muy especial
Para los miles de aficionados de diferentes rincones del mundo, el atractivo del EDAM Sotogrande 2024 no se limitó a la acción en el campo, sino al propio escenario. De hecho, muchos de ellos apreciaban la oportunidad de poder recorrer un campo único, el primero diseñado por Trent Jones en la Europa continental, y en el que mitos como Severiano Ballesteros lograron sus primeros éxitos.
El RCG Sotogrande, por su parte, lució su mejor aspecto para la ocasión, demostrando su sobrada capacidad para acoger torneos de máximo nivel internacional. Con unas instalaciones impecables, una gran organización entre los profesionales del club y del DP World Tour y un campo en perfectas condiciones, la propia visita al club de golf más veterano de Sotogrande completó una experiencia inolvidable para cualquier amante de este deporte.

This tenth edition of the tournament, held for the second year at the RCG Sotogrande, gave the fans unforgettable moments, such as the intense duel between the Spaniards Rahm and Hidalgo, or the exciting final play off between Campillo and Guerrier, among the longest in the history of the European circuit.
The second year of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande was already considered a special occasion for it being its tenth edition, to which further elements were added that made it even more appealing to all golf enthusiasts around the world.
Its position in the final stretch of the DP World Tour season ensured the presence of top players in search of qualifying for the final round of the tournament in Dubai. However, the icing on the cake was undoubtedly the confirmation that Jon Rahm would be attending the RCG Sotogrande, where he competed in the amateur stages, weeks after taking part in the Spanish Open, where he finished second after a tie-break with the young Ángel Hidalgo from Marbella.
Rahm and Hidalgo: the rivalry that set the tone for the tournament
Indeed, the pairing of the two Spaniards, one already established as the world’s top player and the young hopeful who had just triumphed in Madrid, was the main attraction during the first two days of the tournament.

With impeccable facilities, great organisation among the club and DP World Tour professionals and a course in perfect condition, the visit to Sotogrande’s oldest golf club itself rounded off an unforgettable experience for any lover of the sport.
