El Campo de Gibraltar es también el kilómetro cero de una de las aventuras sobre dos ruedas más ambiciosas del continente. La EuroVelo 8, conocida popularmente como la Ruta del Mediterráneo, despliega su trazado a lo largo de casi 6.000 kilómetros para unir Cádiz con Atenas.
Para el residente y el visitante de Sotogrande, esta ruta no es solo un desafío deportivo, sino una invitación a redescubrir el entorno bajo una nueva luz: la de la sostenibilidad y el ritmo pausado del pedal.
La aventura comienza en la Estación de San Roque. Este enclave, de fácil acceso, sirve como lanzadera hacia el interior. Desde aquí, el ciclista se adentra en un recorrido que transcurre inicialmente paralelo a la A-405 por un carril bici perfectamente señalizado que garantiza la seguridad y el disfrute.
Al llegar a Castellar de la Frontera, es el momento de visitar la Iglesia del Divino Salvador o pasear por la Plaza Andalucía, un lugar cargado de simbolismo dedicado a los derechos humanos y a la memoria de la creación de este municipio. Castellar actúa como un balcón natural, recordándonos que el patrimonio y el deporte pueden ir de la mano.
Si la primera etapa nos conecta con la historia, el tramo que une Castellar con Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro rinde homenaje a lo que define nuestra zona. El carril nos guía por la carretera A-2100, más conocida por los locales como la «Carretera de Arenillas». Es un trayecto de unos 24 kilómetros donde el paisaje se transforma en un manto verde.
Pedalear por aquí permite disfrutar de las vistas del Real Club Valderrama y La Reserva. Es el momento de disfrutar de las vistas que ofrecen los campos de los alcornocales y el verde de los campos de golf. Este es uno de los tramos más elegantes de toda la EuroVelo 8, donde el silencio solo se rompe por el giro de la cadena y el sonido de la fauna local.
Una vez alcanzado Pueblo Nuevo, el ciclista se encuentra ante una dualidad interesante. La ruta ofrece dos variantes que permiten personalizar la experiencia según el tiempo y el objetivo del día.
- Hacia la Costa del Sol (destino Estepona): Esta es la senda original que sigue la línea del Mediterráneo. Es un trazado de aproximadamente 50 kilómetros por el litoral, pasando por la Playa de Punta Chullera, el histórico Castillo de la Duquesa y el núcleo de San Luis de Sabinillas. Es la opción ideal para quienes buscan el mar como compañero de viaje constante.
- La circular del Tesorillo (destino Guadiaro): Para aquellos que prefieren un recorrido de retorno o circular, esta variante de 54 kilómetros se interna hacia San Martín del Tesorillo. Es un trazado que lleva a cruzar el Puente de Hierro, donde el ciclista se sitúa en el mismo escenario que cautivó a los localizadores de la serie The Crown.
La EuroVelo 8 es mucho más que un carril bici, es un cordón umbilical que nos une con Europa de la manera más respetuosa posible. Campo de Gibraltar is also «kilometer zero» for one of the continent’s most ambitious two-wheeled adventures. EuroVelo 8, popularly known as the Mediterranean Route, unfolds its path across nearly 6,000 kilometers to link Cádiz with Athens.
For residents and visitors of Sotogrande, this route is not just a sporting challenge, but an invitation to rediscover the surroundings under a new light: that of sustainability and the steady pace of the pedal.
The adventure begins at the San Roque Station. This enclave, which is easy to access, serves as a launchpad toward the interior. From here, the cyclist enters a path that runs parallel to the A-405 along a perfectly signposted bike lane that guarantees safety and enjoyment.
Upon arriving at Castellar de la Frontera, it is the moment to visit the Divine Savior Church (Iglesia del Divino Salvador) or stroll through Plaza Andalucía, a place full of symbolism dedicated to human rights and the memory of the creation of this municipality. Castellar acts as a natural balcony, reminding us that heritage and sport can go hand in hand.
If the first stage connects us with history, the stretch linking Castellar with Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro pays tribute to what defines our area. It is a route of approximately 50 kilometers along the shore, passing by Punta Chullera Beach, the historic Castillo de la Duquesa, and the heart of San Luis de Sabinillas. It is the ideal option for those looking for the sea as a constant travel companion.
2. The Tesorillo Loop (destination: Guadiaro): For those who prefer a return or circular route, this 54-kilometer variant heads inland toward San Martín del Tesorillo. It is a path that leads across the Puente de Hierro where cyclists find themselves in the very same setting that captivated the location scouts for the series The Crown.
