El director del Real Club Valderrama nos recibe mientras ultima detalles para el LIV Golf, el nuevo torneo internacional que llega este verano al mejor campo de España

LIV Golf, el nuevo circuito internacional con las mejores figuras mundiales de este deporte, no podía elegir mejor destino para desembarcar en la Europa continental que el Real Club Valderrama. A escasos días de este importante evento, agradecemos especialmente que el director de Valderrama, Javier Reviriego, encuentre un hueco para tomarse un Café con SGPlus y hablarnos de su trayectoria.

Nacido en Madrid hace 49 años, casado y padre de dos hijas, a Javier le queda algo de su acento natal a pesar de llevar residiendo en Andalucía desde 1989, donde llegó siguiendo su sueño de ser jugador profesional de golf. “Daba clases en el RC Sotogrande mientras competía en el circuito profesional. Me dediqué a ello algunos años, pero me di cuenta pronto que era mundo muy difícil”, comienza  el director de Valderrama.

“El golf ha sido siempre mi vida. Empecé con nueve años y me enganchó desde el principio. Siempre fui muy deportista, jugaba al baloncesto, fútbol, tenis… con 14 años me centré en el golf y conseguí una beca para Estados Unidos”, nos comenta nuestro invitado sobre su etapa en Florida.

“En 1991 era casi impensable. Muy poca gente se iba a Estados Unidos entonces y creo que fue una de las mejores decisiones de mi vida” continúa Javier. “Poder formarme allí gracias al golf fue una muy buena experiencia. Tengo grandes recuerdos; jugar en muchísimos campos, competir con gente muy buena…  no era fácil porque en la escuela de business había que sacarse los estudios para no perder la beca, pero fue una etapa muy bonita que me sirvió para formarme también como persona”.

De su etapa como jugador quedan recuerdos como haber sido Campeón de España amateur. “Fue el campeonato de dobles haciendo pareja con Francisco Tineo en 1994, justo antes de pasar a profesional, en un momento en el que estaba jugando muy bien, la verdad”.

A partir de ahí Javier cumple su sueño de ser profesional, compitiendo varios años en el circuito de España y algún Challenge europeo, hasta que llega el momento de la retirada. “Había llegado a un buen nivel pero vivir del golf como jugador es muy complicado. Me acuerdo del día porque fue en Sotogrande, en una vuelta entrenamiento de la Copa Jerez. Jugué unos hoyos con Sergio García y cuando termine pensé, -éste tiene algo que por mucho que yo practique… no voy a llegar a ese nivel- , pero yo tenía claro que si no podía jugar, quería seguir vinculado a este mundo”.

“Con 29 años me ofrecen convertirme en director de un campo de golf recién inaugurado en Fuerteventura. Aproveché la oportunidad y estuve en Canarias dos años y medio, tras lo que surge la oportunidad de Finca Cortesín”.

Ese regreso a Andalucía hace que Javier se consolide definitivamente en su nueva faceta. “Cortesín fue realmente mi primer trabajo de verdadero peso, donde pude desarrollarme profesionalmente en un proyecto muy bonito. Estuve más de seis años, hicimos la apertura del campo de golf, la del hotel en 2008 y yo estaba muy contento y profesionalmente satisfecho”.

Pero entonces, con apenas 37 años, llega la llamada de Valderrama. “Ante una oportunidad así no se puede decir que no, porque lo más probable es que no pase más. El club estaba pasando una época de cambios, había una nueva junta directiva y muchas inversiones y cambios que había que hacer… y ya son 12 años aquí”.

De sus primeros momentos recuerda que “conocía muy bien la casa y tenía una visión muy clara de lo que había que hacer para que el club siguiese brillando. Los primeros meses no fueron fáciles porque hubo que hacer una reconversión importante, tanto de la plantilla como de la cultura empresarial del club. Fueron dos primeros años difíciles pero hemos avanzado mucho desde entonces”.

“Uno de los mejores momentos de estos 12 años fue cuando, tras un enorme trabajo de la junta directiva con Nuno Brito e Cunha, Jaime Castellanos, Juan Carlos Garay y el resto de consejeros, conseguimos el acuerdo para que los socios comprasen el campo. A partir de ahí comenzó una nueva etapa, pero ha habido muchos otros, como el cambio de los greenes o la construcción del lago nuevo, una inversión fundamental para mejorar la gestión del agua”, recuerda Javier.

Volviendo al presente, el trabajo de Javier ha pasado en estos meses por consolidar la llegada del LIV Golf, un gran circuito internacional que vuelve a poner a Valderrama en el foco mundial del golf. “Tener un torneo profesional forma parte de nuestro modelo de club desde siempre. LIV Golf es una apuesta muy meditada, porque es un tour nuevo, pero creemos que acertada. Vamos a tener a jugadores que de otra forma no hubieran venido a España, y un nivel que no se ha visto desde la Ryder”, explica Javier, recordando aquella cita histórica de 1997 que supuso un antes y un después para esta zona.

“Aquella Ryder cambió Sotogrande y la Costa del Sol. Andalucía como destino turístico de golf no existía prácticamente antes de la Ryder, y ahora somos el número uno de Europa. Todo comenzó ahí y se ha ido fortaleciendo con la construcción de más campos y la llegada de más torneos a lo largo de los años”, afirma Reviriego antes de concluir esta entrevista para seguir otro día más con la enorme responsabilidad de dirigir el mejor campo de golf de España.

Javier Reviriego: «The Valderrama Ryder has changed Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol».

Real Club Valderrama’s director greets us as he finalises details for LIV Golf, the new international tournament coming this summer to Spain’s best course.

LIV Golf, the new international circuit with the best players in the world, could not have chosen a better destination than Real Club Valderrama for its arrival in continental Europe. A few days before this important event, we are especially grateful that Valderrama’s director, Javier Reviriego, found time to have a Coffee with SGPlus and talk to us about his career.

Born in Madrid 49 years ago, married and father of two daughters, Javier still retains some of his native accent despite having lived in Andalusia since 1989, where he arrived in pursuit of his dream of becoming a professional golfer. «I was teaching at RC Sotogrande while competing on the professional circuit. I dedicated myself to it for a few years, but I soon realised that it was a very demanding world,» Javier begins.

«Golf has always been part of my life. I started when I was nine years old, and I was hooked from the very beginning. I was always very sporty, I played basketball, football, tennis… when I was 14, I focused on golf and managed to get a scholarship in the United States», our guest tells us about his time in Florida.

«This was almost inconceivable in 1991. Very few people went to the United States back then and I think it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life,» Javier continues. «Being able to train there through golf was a very good experience. I have great memories; playing on many courses, competing with great people… it wasn’t easy because you had to get a degree in business school in order to keep your scholarship, yet it was a very beautiful period that also helped me develop as a person».

Memories of his time as a player include being Spanish Amateur Champion. «It was the doubles championship, doubling with Francisco Tineo in 1994, just before going professional, at a time when I was playing extremely well, to be honest».

From then on, Javier fulfilled his dream of becoming a professional, competing for several years on the Spanish circuit and in some European Challenges, until the time came for him to retire. «I had reached a good level at that time, but it’s very difficult to make a living from golf as a player. I remember the day because I was in Sotogrande, in the Jerez Cup training round. I played a few holes with Sergio Garcia and when I finished, I thought, ‘this man might have something special, and no matter how hard I practise… I’m not going to reach that level’. However, it was clear to me that if I couldn’t play, I wanted to stay involved in this world».

«When I was 29 years old, I was offered the chance to become the director of a newly opened golf course in Fuerteventura. I took advantage of the opportunity and stayed in the Canary Islands for two and a half years, after which Finca Cortesín came along».

Javier’s return to Andalusia has allowed him to permanently consolidate himself in this new aspect of his career. «Cortesín was actually my first truly important job, where I was able to develop professionally within a very beautiful project. I was there for more than six years; we opened the golf course and the hotel in 2008 and I felt very happy and professionally satisfied».

But then, at just 37 years of age, Valderrama came calling. «Faced with an opportunity like this, you can’t just say no, because the chances are that it won’t happen again. The club was going through a time of change, there was a new board of directors and a lot of investments and changes that had to be made… and it’s been 12 years now».

Of his early days, he recalls that «he knew the club very well and had a very clear vision of what needed to be done for the club to continue to shine. The first few months were not easy because we had to carry out major reorganisations, both in terms of the staff and the club’s business culture. It was a difficult first two years for us, but we have come a long way since then.»

«One of the best moments of these 12 years was when, after an enormous amount of work by the board of directors along with Nuno Brito e Cunha, Jaime Castellanos, Juan Carlos Garay and all the rest counselors, we managed to reach an agreement so that the members could buy the course. From then on, a new chapter began, but there have been many others, such as the change of the greens or the development of the new lake, a fundamental investment for improving water management,» Javier recalls.

Back to the present, Javier’s work in recent months has been to promote the arrival of LIV Golf, a major international circuit that once again puts Valderrama back in the world golfing spotlight. «Having a professional tournament has always been part of our club model. LIV Golf is a very well-thought-out bet because it happens to be a new Tour, and we believe it’s the right one. We are going to bring players who otherwise would not have come to Spain, and a level that has not yet been seen after the Ryder,» Javier explains, recalling the historic 1997 event that marked a before and after for golf in the area.

«That Ryder changed Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol. Andalucía practically didn’t exist as a golf tourist destination before the Ryder, and we are now number one in Europe. It all started from there and has gone on growing stronger with the construction of more courses and the arrival of more tournaments over the years,» Reviriego says before concluding this interview to carry on another day with the enormous responsibility of running Spain’s best golf course.
