En nuestro ‘Café con…’ conocemos mejor al promotor de Iberian Polo Tour y el autor del histórico gol que le dio a la España el Campeonato del Mundo de Polo de 2022
No todos los días surge la oportunidad de conversar con todo un Campeón del Mundo, y sobre todo, como en este caso, si tu interlocutor es el protagonista de un momento histórico para el deporte español.
Sin embargo, en Sotogrande es posible si te encuentras con uno de sus vecinos, el polista Pelayo Berazadi. El capitán de la Selección Española y autor del gol de oro que certificó la victoria en el Mundial de 2022 reconoce emocionarse todavía al recordar ese momento. “Todavía se me pone la piel de gallina. Ganar un Campeonato del Mundo con tu selección, y además para España, donde el polo es un deporte atípico, fue algo histórico y único. Lo más importante que me ha pasado en mi carrera. Para mí marcar el gol de oro en el chukker suplementario fue algo alucinante”.
Nacido en 1989, casado y con dos hijos de 5 y 2 años, Pelayo y su mujer Inés se han asentado definitivamente en Sotogrande, donde nuestro protagonista vivió su infancia y donde tomó contacto con su deporte. “Elegí el polo por vivir en Sotogrande. De pequeño era muy deportista y siempre me gustaron los caballos, pero en mi casa no había tradición, aunque mi padre jugó a nivel amateur y tenía muchos amigos en este mundo. Yo empecé a practicarlo como cualquier otro deporte, que es muy raro en España, pero aquí se veía como algo normal”.
“Con 14 ó 15 años empecé a tomármelo más en serio. Iba a Ayala o a Santa María a ver los partidos, a ayudar a los petiseros y cuando faltaba uno me llamaban”, nos explica Pelayo. “En esa época además había una escuela con Tito Gómez en Ayala donde acudíamos un grupo de niños. De ahí salimos toda una generación de jugadores de polo, varios de ellos profesionales”.
“Para mí el polo era un hobby. El paso al profesionalismo se fue dando con el tiempo. Con 18 años mi futuro se orientaba hacia la Universidad y trabajar en un banco, hasta que tuve una charla con mi padre que me animó a hacer algo que verdaderamente me gustase. Eso fue un punto de inflexión”, recuerda nuestro Pelaypo, que nos relata la llamada que terminó de cambiar su destino. “Ya trabajaba en un banco en Madrid cuando me llamaron de Dubai un martes a primera hora de la mañana porque necesitaban urgentemente un jugador europeo. Yo tenía tres goles y no era puramente profesional, pero me pidieron incorporación inmediata. Llegué a un equipo muy bueno, con Facundo Sola, que me ayudó mucho. Comencé a jugar y pedí en la oficina algo más de tiempo para seguir probando, pero al final nunca volví”.
Siendo aún jugador en activo, y sin haber cumplido siquiera los treinta, Pelayo da un nuevo paso con la creación de Iberian Polo, que promueve torneos durante todo el año en la Península. “Mi perfil en este mundillo es algo atípico; jugador europeo, con formación universitaria… y le quise sacar ese lado empresarial a mi deporte. Después de viajar tanto siguiendo el circuito internacional siempre he visto que mi casa, Sotogrande, era mejor que cualquier otro sitio del mundo, por sus instalaciones, su ubicación, el clima…”
“Sotogrande es lo máximo a nivel internacional en julio y agosto, pero hay mucha diferencia con la temporada baja. Por eso aposté primero por el otoño, y después en primavera para prolongar la temporada aquí en vez de seguir viajando”. Una arriesgada apuesta que supone un evidente esfuerzo por desestacionalizar la oferta de Sotogrande. “El cliente europeo o asiático alucina con Sotogrande también en abril y octubre. Yo me encargo de la parte deportiva, pero esto evidentemente ayuda a toda la zona en general, hoteles, tiendas, restaurantes… entre todos tenemos que colaborar para no ser sólo un destino de verano”.
“Estoy muy feliz por cómo seguimos creciendo. Hoy organizamos competiciones en una docena de fines de semana al año, también en Barcelona y Madrid, pero el foco principal es Sotogrande”. Y es que este empresario y Campeón del Mundo, a pesar de haber nacido en Madrid y de familia donostiarra, se considera de esta tierra. “Yo soy de Sotogrande. Aquí viví hasta los 15 años, después en Madrid hasta los 25 y mis hijos son sevillanos, pero tras el COVID nos instalamos aquí y estoy replicando lo que hicieron mis padres conmigo. Darles a mis hijos la oportunidad de criarse en un sitio fantástico, al aire libre, con deporte y vida sana”.
Sus hijos son aún muy pequeños, pero está deseando poder introducirles en su deporte favorito. “No necesariamente para que se dediquen a ello, pero sí para compartir esta afición con ellos. Veo otras familias que lo hacen y me da una envidia sana tremenda”.
Por eso, como comenta con una sonrisa, pudo convencer a su mujer para asentarse definitivamente en Sotogrande. “Es que es mi casa, mi sitio en el mundo, y quiero que quienes estén a mi lado sientan lo mismo. Por eso me encanta fomentar Sotogrande y hago todo lo que pueda por este lugar”.

It is not every day that you have the opportunity to talk to a World Champion, and especially if your interlocutor is the protagonist of a historic moment for Spanish sports.
However, this is possible in Sotogrande if you meet one of its neighbours, polo player Pelayo Berazadi. The captain of the Spanish national team and scorer of the golden goal that certified the victory in the 2022 World Cup admits that he still gets emotional when he remembers that moment. «I still get goose bumps. Winning a World Championship with your national team, and also for Spain, where polo is an unusual sport, was something historic and unique. The most important thing that has happened to me in my career. For me, scoring the golden goal in the extra chukka was mind-blowing.»
Born in 1989, married and with two children aged 5 and 2, Pelayo and his wife Inés have settled permanently in Sotogrande, where our protagonist spent his childhood and where he came into contact with the sport. «I chose polo because I live in Sotogrande. As a child I was very athletic and always liked horses, but at home there was no polo tradition, although my father played at amateur level and had many friends in the world of polo. I started playing polo like any other sport, which is very rare in Spain, yet here it was seen as something normal».
«When I was 14 or 15 I started to take it more seriously. I would go to Ayala or Santa María to watch the matches, to help the players out and whenever one of them was absent, they would call me,» Pelayo explains. «At that time there was also a school with Tito Gómez in Ayala where a group of children attended. From there we produced a whole generation of polo players, several of them professionals».
«Polo was a hobby for me. The transition to professionalism came with time. When I was 18 years old, my future was university and working in a bank, until I had a talk with my father who encouraged me to do something I really liked. That was a turning point», recalls our Pelayo, who tells us about the call that ultimately changed his destiny. «I was already working in a bank in Madrid when I got a call from Dubai early one Tuesday morning. They urgently needed a European player. I had three goals and I wasn’t purely professional, but they asked me to join them immediately. I joined a very good team, with Facundo Sola, who helped me a lot. I started to play and I asked the office for some more time to keep playing, though in the end I never came back.»
Still an active player, and not even thirty years old, Pelayo has taken a new step with the creation of Iberian Polo, which promotes tournaments in Spain throughout the year. «My profile in this world is somewhat atypical; European player, with a university education… and I wanted to bring that entrepreneurial side to my sport. After travelling so much following the international circuit I have always seen that my home, Sotogrande, was better than any other place in the world, for its facilities, its location, its climate…».
«Sotogrande is at the top internationally in July and August, but it is very different from the off season. That’s why I opted first for autumn, and then in spring to extend the season rather than continuing to travel». A risky bet that is an obvious effort to deseasonalise Sotogrande’s range of attractions. «The European or Asian client is amazed with Sotogrande even in April and October. I am in charge of the sporting side, but this obviously helps the whole area in general, hotels, shops, restaurants… we all have to work together to not just be a summer destination».
«I am very happy with how we continue to grow. Today we organise competitions a dozen weekends a year, and in Barcelona and Madrid, but the main focus is always Sotogrande». Despite the fact that this businessman and World Champion was born in Madrid and has a family from San Sebastian, he considers himself to be from this area. «I am from Sotogrande. I lived here until I was 15, then in Madrid until I was 25 and my children are from Seville, but after COVID we settled here and I am replicating what my parents did with me. Giving my children the opportunity to grow up in a fantastic place, in the open air, with sports and a healthy lifestyle».
His children are still very young, but he is looking forward to introducing them to his favourite sport. «Not necessarily to get them into it, but to share this hobby with them. I see other families who do it and it makes me very envious.»
That is why, as he comments confidently smiling, he was able to convince his wife to settle in Sotogrande. «It is my home, my place in the world, and I want those around me to feel the same. That’s why I love to promote Sotogrande and I do everything I can for this place.»
