Compartimos un Café con… Rob y James Laver, pasado, presente y futuro de una trayectoria empresarial con más de cuatro décadas en el sector inmobiliario, y representantes de dos generaciones de una familia angloandaluza unida también por su pasión por Sotogrande.
Rob Laver Property Consultants es otra de las empresas locales que ha apostado por la nueva etapa de Plaza Blanca para instalarse en el renacido centro comercial. En su oficina nos reciben Rob y James Laver, padre e hijo, con los que iniciamos la conversación charlando sobre la llegada de Rob a Sotogrande, hace ya cuarenta años.
“Yo nací en Somerset, al suroeste de Inglaterra, en una familia agrónoma. Tras terminar mi carrera universitaria en la Escuela Real de Agricultura, vine a España en 1983 y me enamoré de Sevilla, concretamente de Morón de la Frontera, (y tiempo después de una sevillana que terminó convirtiéndose en su esposa y madre de sus hijos) y me encantó la idea de vivir en Andalucía”, comienza Rob.
“En aquella época escribía artículos para un periódico de Inglaterra especializado en temas rurales, el Farmers Weekly, y quien los corregía tenía relación con una empresa instalada en Sotogrande. Entre sus vendedores no tenían ninguno que supiese algo sobre el campo, pero yo con mis estudios de gestión agropecuaria podía ayudarles, y ya que no había encontrado trabajo en Sevilla, acepté. Sobre ese año 85 y 86 la tierra de Andalucía era muy barata comparado con Europa, y había muchas gente y empresas británicas interesadas en comprar fincas”.
“En principio me imaginaba que Sotogrande iba a ser más parecido a la Costa del Sol, y no me apetecía mucho, pero cuando llegué me encantó. Yo soy una persona de pueblo y me gusta más la tranquilidad, y Sotogrande encajaba muy bien en esa idea”, continúa Rob, que nos confirma que el paso al sector inmobiliario no le costó, ya que también lo lleva en su ADN. “En la familia de mi padre fueron toda la vida agentes inmobiliarios, como mi abuelo y mi tío, con lo que no tuve ningún problema”.
Tras ese primer trabajo en Sotogrande, Rob nos cuenta cómo a partir de 1990 continúa su actividad por su cuenta con varios socios, hasta que en 2002 crea en solitario Rob Laver y Asociados SL (ahora Rob Laver Property Consultants), lo que nos lleva al testigo que ahora ha recogido su hijo al frente de la empresa familiar.
“Yo trabajaba para una empresa de software en Barcelona y no tenía intención de volver tan pronto, pero con la pandemia me vine a teletrabajar. Al mes ya me di cuenta de que quería instalarme en Sotogrande, de hecho ya había empezado a trabajar con mi padre mientras seguía con la otra empresa”, explica James. “El mercado inmobiliario se estaba revolucionando y era una oportunidad que no podía desaprovechar. La pandemia ha cambiado mucho Sotogrande, aumentando la población residente. Muchos amigos míos que como yo se han criado aquí y estaban fuera también han vuelto a vivir aquí”
“Es cierto que todo ha sido decisión suya”, interviene Rob. “Cuando regresó yo ya estaba casi jubilándome, y ha sido él quien le ha dado nueva vida al negocio y quien ha decidido montar esta nueva oficina”.
“El COVID fue una tragedia que no trajo nada bueno para nadie, pero para nosotros hizo que mi hijo regresase y que remontase la empresa familiar, porque han sido tres de los mejores años de ventas en la historia de Sotogrande y de la empresa”, explica con orgullo de padre, que destaca cómo la incorporación de su hijo ha actualizado Rob Laver Property Consultants con una mayor inversión en marketing y producción audiovisual, en respuesta a la demanda del perfil actual de clientes.
Ambos aseguran que les resultó muy fácil trabajar en familia, y de hecho Jamie destaca los sabios consejos de su padre. “Cuando regresé de Barcelona mi padre seguía trabajando y me acompañaba a las visitas. Con su experiencia y su apoyo aprendí muchísimo, fueron dos años de aprendizaje brutal”, explica el actual gerente de Rob Laver Property Consultants, que augura un gran futuro para Sotogrande. “Hoy en día es un lugar donde la gente joven se siente muy a gusto. Una comunidad muy internacional que ofrece muchas posibilidades y donde el deporte juega un papel fundamental en la vida social, lo que genera una comunidad muy activa y conectada”.
De este aprendizaje destacan enseñanzas como priorizar la dedicación en la atención a cada cliente “tanto que después muchos se convierten en vecinos y amigos”, apunta Rob con una sonrisa; o saber transmitir el característico lifestyle de Sotogrande. Una zona única en el mundo en la que el visitante, como le ocurrió al propio Rob, puede encontrar su sitio para echar raíces y formar una familia tan representativa del espíritu internacional y cosmopolita de este rincón de Andalucía.

Rob and James Laver, a passion for Sotogrande passed down from father to son
We share a Coffee with… Rob and James Laver, past, present, and future of a business career spanning over four decades in the real estate sector, and representatives of two generations of an Anglo-Andalusian family also united by their passion for Sotogrande.
Rob Laver Property Consultants is another local company that has embraced the new phase of Plaza Blanca, setting up in the revitalized shopping center. At their office, we’re welcomed by Rob and James Laver—father and son—with whom we begin our conversation by talking about Rob’s arrival in Sotogrande, now forty years ago.
“I was born in Somerset, in the southwest of England, into an agricultural family. After finishing my university studies at the Royal Agricultural College, I came to Spain in 1983 and fell in love with Seville—specifically Morón de la Frontera,” (and later with a Sevillian woman who would become his wife and the mother of his children), “and I loved the idea of living in Andalusia,” Rob begins.
“At the time, I was writing articles for an English newspaper focused on rural affairs, Farmers Weekly, and the person who proofread them had ties to a company based in Sotogrande. They didn’t have any salespeople who knew much about rural land, but with my background in agricultural management, I could help them. Since I hadn’t found a job in Seville, I accepted. Around 1985 and 1986, land in Andalusia was very cheap compared to the rest of Europe, and many British individuals and companies were interested in buying estates.”
“I initially imagined Sotogrande to be more like the Costa del Sol, which didn’t really appeal to me, but when I arrived, I was immediately taken by it. I’m a small-town person and enjoy peace and quiet, and Sotogrande really fit that vision,” Rob continues, confirming that the transition into the real estate sector wasn’t difficult for him, since it runs in the family. “On my father’s side, everyone worked in real estate—my grandfather, my uncle—so I had no problem at all.”
After that first job in Sotogrande, Rob tells us how, from 1990 onwards, he continued working independently with various partners until, in 2002, he founded Rob Laver y Asociados SL (now Rob Laver Property Consultants) on his own. That brings us to the present, where his son has now taken the reins of the family business.
“I was working for a software company in Barcelona and didn’t plan to return so soon, but I came back to work remotely during the pandemic. Within a month, I realized I wanted to settle in Sotogrande. I had already started helping my father while still working for the other company,” James explains. “The real estate market was booming and I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. The pandemic has changed Sotogrande significantly, with the resident population increasing. Many of my friends, who also grew up here and had moved away, have returned too.”
“It’s true that it was entirely his decision,” Rob adds. “When he came back, I was already close to retiring, and it was he who brought new life to the business and decided to open this new office.”
“COVID was a tragedy that brought nothing good to anyone,” Rob reflects, “but for us, it meant my son returned and revived the family business. These past three years have been among the best in terms of sales for both Sotogrande and the company,” he says proudly. He also highlights how James’ arrival modernized Rob Laver Property Consultants with greater investment in marketing and audiovisual content, adapting to the evolving demands of today’s clients.
Both affirm that working together as a family has been very natural, and Jamie especially values his father’s advice. “When I came back from Barcelona, my father was still working and would accompany me on client visits. I learned a tremendous amount from him—those first two years were an intense learning experience,” explains the current manager of Rob Laver Property Consultants, who sees a bright future for Sotogrande. “Today it’s a place where young people feel right at home. It’s a very international community with lots of opportunities, where sports play a central role in the social scene, creating a very active and connected environment.”
From this learning experience they highlight valuable lessons such as the importance of dedicating time and care to each client, “so much so that many of them later become neighbours and friends,” Rob says with a smile, and the ability to convey the unique Sotogrande lifestyle. It is a one-of-a-kind place where visitors, just like Rob once did, may find the perfect setting to lay down roots and build a family that reflects the international and cosmopolitan spirit of this special corner of Andalusia.
