El artista Paco Hernández nos ofrece una nueva imagen muy característica de Sotogrande, representada gracias a su dominio de las acuarelas
En esta ocasión, el pintor nos muestra cómo ha podido captar sobre el lienzo una escena habitual de cada domingo del año en el paseo de la Marina de Sotogrande, el tradicional Mercado de Levante.
La acuarela:
La imagen que nos ofrece esta acuarela vertical es una representación del paisaje urbano que podemos encontrar en cualquier domingo en la Ribera del Marlin.
Una cita ya tradicional para los residentes de Sotogrande y vecinos de otras localidades de la zona en la que la Marina se transforma en un mercado ambulante donde contrastan, por un lado, los veleros y barcos recreativos atracados en el muelle, y por otro, los toldos multicolores de los puestos del mercado, que se mezclan con las terrazas de los diferentes restaurantes de la zona.
El Mercado de Levante se instala durante la mañana y mediodía de cada domingo del año, aunque es en verano (como el momento captado por el artista), y otros periodos vacacionales cuando amplía su horario, incluyendo el tradicional mercadillo nocturno de julio y agosto.
Impresiones del artista:
“Domingo de Mercadillo en Puerto Sotogrande Domingo de finales de agosto.
Aunque el clima nos dio un breve respiro, las temperaturas han vuelto a subir. Me dirijo al mercadillo de Puerto Sotogrande y, como de costumbre, prefiero llegar al mediodía, sobre las 12, cuando el bullicio alcanza su punto álgido y la muchedumbre ofrece esa esencia vibrante y caótica tan propia de los domingos.
Decido montar el caballete en pleno corazón del mercadillo. El termómetro roza los 40 grados y el sol aprieta con fuerza, pero el dinamismo de los transeúntes, que van y vienen entre los puestos, imprime un movimiento perfecto para la obra.
Trabajo con una paleta de colores cálidos —sienas y ocres— para reflejar la intensidad de la jornada. Dejo blancos estratégicos para iluminar los barcos del margen izquierdo, que contrastan con el verde esmeralda del agua y los toldos en cobalto turquesa.
El resultado es satisfactorio: la atmósfera quedó capturada y la jornada, pese al calor sofocante, mereció la pena”.

Sotogrande in Watercolours: The Levante Market
The artist Paco Hernández offers us a new, highly characteristic image of Sotogrande, brought to life through his mastery of watercolours.
On this occasion, the painter shows us how he has captured on canvas a typical scene from any Sunday of the year along Sotogrande Marina: the traditional Levante Market.
The Watercolour:
The image presented in this vertical watercolour is a depiction of the urban landscape found on any Sunday at Ribera del Marlin.
A now-traditional appointment for Sotogrande residents and visitors from nearby towns, where the Marina transforms into a bustling market. Here, the moored sailing and recreational boats contrast with the multicoloured canopies of the market stalls, blending with the terraces of the area’s various restaurants.
The Levante Market operates during the morning and midday of every Sunday, although in summer (as captured by the artist) and other holiday periods, it extends its hours to include the traditional evening market of July and August.
Artist’s Impressions:
“Sunday at the Puerto Sotogrande Market, late August.
Although the weather gave us a brief respite, the temperatures rose again. I head to the Puerto Sotogrande market and, as usual, prefer to arrive around midday, at 12 o’clock, when the bustle reaches its peak and the crowd brings that vibrant, chaotic essence so typical of Sundays.
I decide to set up my easel in the heart of the market. The thermometer nears 40°C, and the sun beats down strongly, but the movement of passers-by, weaving between the stalls, creates perfect dynamism for the painting.
I work with a warm colour palette, siennas and ochres, to convey the intensity of the day. I leave strategic whites to illuminate the boats on the left-hand side, contrasting with the emerald green of the water and the turquoise cobalt canopies.
The result is satisfying: the atmosphere is captured, and despite the sweltering heat, the day was worth it.”
