Nuestra especial sección de entrevistas ha contado este año con protagonistas de excepciónde esta fórmula de éxito. Desde campeones mundiales hasta los responsables del trabajo que, día a día, resulta fundamental para mantener el atractivo estilo de vida de Sotogrande.
Susana Pérez Custodio: “El Campo de Gibraltar es la joya del sur de España”
El escenario de nuestro primer ‘Café con…’ de 2024 fue en el centenario Hotel Reina Cristina de Algeciras, donde charlamos con la presidenta de la Mancomunidad de Municipios del Campo de Gibraltar, Susana Pérez Custodio.
La edil algecireña, periodista de profesión, nos relató su entrada en política, al frente de las delegaciones de Turismo de su ciudad y de la propia Mancomunidad. También destacó los diversos atractivos del Campo de Gibraltar, justo antes de una nueva edición de FITUR en Madrid donde se volvió a presentar la oferta turística de los ocho municipios de la zona.
Chloé Brandalac: “Cuando me ofrecieron quedarme a trabajar en Sotogrande fue imposible decir que no”
En este ‘Café Con…’, pudimos conocer mejor a otra de las integrantes del internacional equipo que gestiona el SO/ Sotogrande Golf&SPA Resort, su directora de Ventas y Marketing, Chloé Brandalac.
Esta parisina de 41 años nos detalló su pasión y vocación por el sector turístico, donde comenzó a trabajar desde muy joven. De su etapa en Sotogrande, Chloé destacó sobre todo la reapertura del hotel tras su gran reforma. Un momento muy especial que, como afirmaba, sirvió para unir mucho a la plantilla del resort.
Juan Quirós: “Si sigo con esta mentalidad y físicamente bien, no me extrañaría seguir hasta los 70”
Conversar con Juan Quirós es hablar con historia viva del golf español, y por eso disfrutamos especialmente este ‘Café Con…’ el campeón de Guadiaro en el Real Club Golf Sotogrande, donde comenzó a trabajar siendo apenas un niño.
Tras más de 850 torneos disputados y 50 años como golfista profesional, Juan Quirós nos relató su humilde origen, su pasión por su familia, cómo se inició en el golf, y un sinfín de anécdotas de una trayectoria profesional en la que se codeó con los más grandes de este deporte, especialmente con Severiano Ballesteros, con el que le unía una gran amistad.
Pelayo Berazadi: “No hay mejor sitio en el mundo para el polo que Sotogrande”
Continuando con grandes protagonistas de nuestro deporte, también nos tomamos ‘Un Café con…’ Pelayo Berazadi, capitán de la Selección Española de polo y autor del histórico gol que le dio a la España el Campeonato del Mundo de 2022.
Pelayo nos contó su enorme cariño por Sotogrande, donde pasó su infancia y donde también ha decidido vivir con su esposa e hijos, además de ser uno de los destinos preferentes para su aventura empresarial, Iberian Polo Tour, con el que promueve su deporte por diferentes lugares de España.
Juan Serván: “trabajar para tus vecinos es una enorme satisfacción”
Al final de la primavera, en plena preparación de la temporada de verano de todo el litoral sanroqueño, compartimos ‘Un Café con…’ Juan Serván, el delegado municipal de Medio Ambiente y Playas del Ayuntamiento de San Roque.
En nuestra charla, junto a la playa de Torreguadiaro, además de sus responsabilidades públicas, pudimos conocer mejor su larga trayectoria en colectivos ciudadanos y deportivos de su Taraguilla natal, en el club de fútbol de su barriada o participando activamente en el movimiento vecinal contra la droga.
Ricardo Andrades “El New Course es aún una joya por descubrir”
En junio regresábamos al golf disfrutando de ‘Un Café con…’ todo un veterano en esta industria como Ricardo Andrades tras haber asumido su nueva responsabilidad como director del San Roque Club II.
El ambicioso proyecto de Berwick Real Estates para el campo de golf más desconocido del municipio, los inicios profesionales de Ricardo, sus vivencias por medio mundo y su pasión por su tierra fueron los principales temas de nuestra charla con el único director de campos de golf autóctono del Valle del Guadiaro.
Belén Ibáñez: “Sotogrande es un destino que escoge a quien lo busca”
El patio interior de La Reserva Club fue el escenario de nuestro ‘Café con…’ Belén Ibáñez García de Oteyza, PR & Brand Manager de Sotogrande SA. Esta ilerdense “con corazón madrileño” (como ella misma se definía), cumplía entonces dos años de su llegada a Sotogrande, donde ya se encuentra perfectamente integrada y disfrutando de su trabajo promoviendo la actividad del SO/ Sotogrande y La Reserva Club con múltiples y originales iniciativas.
Durante nuestra conversación conocimos diferentes anécdotas de su infancia, como sus vacaciones por diferentes hoteles del mundo gracias al trabajo de sus padres; sus inicios profesionales en Madrid; y su objetivo de integrar a la comunidad residente en Sotogrande a los eventos que organiza durante todo el año.
Álvaro Castillejo Preysler: “Ser partícipe de un evento de la magnitud del Torneo Internacional es algo increíble”
En agosto, el mes del polo en Sotogrande, compartimos ‘Un Café con…’ el responsable de Marketing y RRPP del Torneo Internacional, Álvaro Castillejo Preysler en las canchas de Ayala.
Nacido en California con sangre argentina y filipina, pero afincado en Madrid desde su niñez, Álvaro recordó con SGplus sus divertidos veranos en Sotogrande con su familia. También nos detalló su labor dentro de la organización del Torneo Internacional de Polo, aunque a su pasión por su trabajo se le sumaba en esta entrevista su ilusión por el embarazo de su mujer. Y es que para Álvaro, más allá de la enorme fama de su apellido, que él lleva con absoluta normalidad, su familia siempre ha sido uno de los pilares fundamentales de su vida.
Antonio Merino: “Trabajar en Santa María Club me ha permitido unir mis dos pasiones”
De Antonio Merino, director general de Santa María Equestrian Club, pudimos conocer el origen de su afición por la hípica, heredada de su madre, y cómo pasó su infancia en el club hípico de Fuengirola, compitiendo primero, y llegando a ser juez de torneos oficiales después.
En su faceta profesional como ingeniero industrial, Antonio ha participado en grandes proyectos como hospitales, hoteles, centros comerciales e incluso la ampliación del aeropuerto de Málaga, hasta su contratación por Santa María Club para optimizar sus instalaciones de polo y el nuevo proyecto dedicado a la hípica.
Francisco Cuenca: “El resort no es sólo nuestro hotel, sino todo Sotogrande”
El actual director de guardia de SO/ Sotogrande compartía ‘Un Café con…’ SGplus repasando sus 24 años de trayectoria profesional en la zona. Desde sus inicios en el verano de 2001 en el Club del Playa El Cucurucho, su etapa en el hotel Sotogrande o su llegada a Almenara, hasta su trasformación en el SO/ Sotogrande, este linense y “también orgulloso campogibraltareño”, destacaba el buen momento que estaba viviendo el resort.
Para Francisco, además del creciente atractivo de Sotogrande para el visitante, también es clave el desempeño de sus profesionales, afirmando que “el lujo también lo hacen las personas, el trato que recibe el cliente en el día a día”.
Juan Carmona: “No pienso jubilarme nunca de navegar”
Abogado, exalcalde de La Línea, experto navegante, y dedicado padre y abuelo… las siete décadas de vida de nuestro colaborador Juan Carmona darían para más de ‘Un Café con…’ pero en esta entrevista pudimos descubrir interesantes detalles de este linense apasionado de su ciudad que, sin embargo, vivió su infancia y juventud en Madrid.
Con una extensa trayectoria profesional, que incluyó el desarrollo de la industria eólica por Cádiz y Sevilla, dedicamos buena parte de nuestra conversación a su etapa política, especialmente como alcalde de La Línea, el más votado de la historia de su ciudad.
Juan regó la conversación de innumerables anécdotas, tanto de los duros momentos vividos para reflotar el Ayuntamiento como su participación directa en la histórica reapertura de la Verja de Gibraltar en 1982, ahora que 42 años después, aún se mantienen las negociaciones para intentar eliminar la frontera.

‘A Coffee with… 2024’: Sports and Tourism further boost Sotogrande’s success
Golf, polo and equestrianism, three of the sports that have forged the history of Sotogrande and its touristic attractiveness, have been very present throughout our ‘A Coffee with…’ of 2024 featuring a variety of protagonists.
Our special interview section this year has featured some exceptional protagonists involved in this success formula. From world champions to those responsible for the day-to-day work that is fundamental to maintaining Sotogrande’s alluring lifestyle.
Susana Pérez Custodio: «Campo de Gibraltar is southern Spain’s crown jewel».
The stage for our first ‘Coffee with…’ of 2024 was in the centenary Hotel Reina Cristina in Algeciras, where we chatted with the president of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, Susana Pérez Custodio.
The Algeciras councillor, a journalist by profession, told us about her introduction into politics, at the head of the Tourism delegations of her city and of the Commonwealth of Municipalities itself. She also highlighted the various attractions of the Campo de Gibraltar, just before a new edition of FITUR in Madrid would happen, where the tourist offering of the eight municipalities in the area would be on display once again.
Chloé Brandalac: «It was impossible for me to refuse when I was offered to stay and work in Sotogrande»
In this ‘Coffee With…’, we got to know Chloé Brandalac better, another member of the international team that manages the SO/ Sotogrande Golf&SPA Resort, its Sales and Marketing Director.
The 41-year-old Parisian told us about her passion and vocation for the tourism sector, where she started working at a very young age. From her time in Sotogrande, Chloé highlighted above all the reopening of the hotel after its major refurbishment. A very special moment that, as she said, served to unite the resort’s staff.
Juan Quirós: «If I continue with the same mentality and physically fit, I wouldn’t be surprised to go on until I’m 70»
To talk to Juan Quirós is to talk to the living history of Spanish golf, and that’s why we especially enjoyed this ‘Coffee With…’ The Guadiaro champion began working at Real Club Golf Sotogrande when he was just a child.
After more than 850 tournaments played and 50 years as a professional golfer, Juan Quirós told us about his humble origins, his passion for his family, how he started playing golf, and countless anecdotes of a professional career in which he rubbed shoulders with the greatest of the sport, especially with Severiano Ballesteros, a great friend of his.
Pelayo Berazadi: «There is no better place in the world for polo than Sotogrande»
We continued with the great protagonists of our sports with Pelayo Berazadi, captain of the Spanish polo team and author of the historic strike that won Spain the 2022 World Championship.
Pelayo told us about his great affection for Sotogrande, where he spent his childhood and where he has also decided to live with his wife and children, as well as being one of the preferred destinations for his business venture, Iberian Polo Tour, with which he promotes his sport in different parts of Spain.
Juan Serván: ‘working for your neighbours brings enormous satisfaction’
Towards the end of spring, in full preparation for the summer season along the San Roque coastline, we shared ‘A Coffee with…’ Juan Serván, the municipal delegate for the Environment and Beaches of the San Roque Town Hall.
During our chat, next to Torreguadiaro beach, in addition to his public responsibilities, we were able to learn more about his long career in citizen and sports groups at his native Taraguilla, in the football club of his neighbourhood or actively participating in the neighbourhood movement against drugs.
Ricardo Andrades ‘The New Course remains an undiscovered treasure’
In June we returned to golf by enjoying ‘A Coffee with…’ a veteran in this industry such as Ricardo Andrades after taking on his new responsibility as director of the San Roque Club II.
The ambitious project of Berwick Real Estates regarding the most unknown golf course in the municipality, Ricardo’s professional beginnings, his experiences around the world and his passion for his homeland were the main topics of our chat with the only native golf course manager in the Guadiaro Valley.
Belén Ibáñez: ‘Sotogrande is a place that chooses those who seek it’
The inner courtyard of La Reserva Club was the setting for our ‘Coffee with…’. Belén Ibáñez García de Oteyza, PR & Brand Manager of Sotogrande SA. This native of Lleida ‘with a Madrid soul’ (as she defines herself), was celebrating two years since her arrival in Sotogrande, where she is already perfectly integrated and enjoying her work promoting the activity of SO/ Sotogrande and La Reserva Club with multiple and original initiatives.
During our conversation we learned a number of anecdotes from her childhood, such as her holidays in different hotels around the world thanks to her parents’ work; her professional beginnings in Madrid; and her goal of integrating the Sotogrande residential community into the events she organises throughout the year.
Álvaro Castillejo Preysler: «It’s incredible to be part of an event of the International Tournament’s magnitude»
This August, the month of polo in Sotogrande, we shared ‘A Coffee with…’ the head of Marketing and PR of the International Tournament, Álvaro Castillejo Preysler at the Ayala fields.
Born in California with Argentine and Filipino blood, but settled in Madrid since childhood, Alvaro recalled with SGplus his fun summers in Sotogrande with his family. He also detailed his work in the organisation of the International Polo Tournament, although his passion for his work was complemented in this interview by his excitement about his wife’s pregnancy. For Álvaro, beyond the enormous fame of his surname, which he carries with absolute normality, his family has always been one of the fundamental pillars of his life.
Antonio Merino: «Working at Santa María Club has allowed me to merge both of my passions»
From Antonio Merino, general manager of Santa María Equestrian Club, we were able to learn about the origin of his passion for horse riding, inherited from his mother, and how he spent his childhood at the Fuengirola riding club. He first competed and later became a judge at official tournaments.
In his professional career as an industrial engineer, Antonio has been involved in major projects such as hospitals, hotels, shopping centres and even the expansion of the Malaga airport, until he was hired by Santa María Club to optimise its polo facilities and its new project dedicated to equestrian sports.
Francisco Cuenca: “The resort is not just our hotel, but the whole of Sotogrande”
The current on-duty manager of SO/ Sotogrande shared ‘A Coffee with…’ SGplus reviewing his 24 years of professional career in the area. Since its inception in the summer of 2001 at the Beach Club El Cucurucho, his time at the hotel Sotogrande or his arrival in Almenara, until its transformation into the SO / Sotogrande, this linense and ‘also proud campogibraltareño’, highlighted the momentum that the resort was experiencing.
For Francisco, in addition to the growing attraction of Sotogrande for visitors, the performance of its professionals is also key, stating that ‘luxury is also made by people, the treatment received by the customer on a daily basis’.
Juan Carmona: ‘I never plan on retiring from sailing’.
Lawyer, ex-mayor of La Línea, expert sailor, and proud father and grandfather… the seven decades of the life of our collaborator Juan Carmona could be enough for more than ‘A Coffee with…’ but in this interview we were able to discover interesting details about this man from La Línea who is passionate about his city but who, nevertheless, spent his childhood and youth in Madrid.
With an extensive professional career, which included the development of the wind power industry in Cadiz and Seville, we dedicated a large part of our conversation to his political career, especially as mayor of La Línea, the most voted mayor in the history of his city.
Juan peppered the conversation with countless anecdotes, both about the hard times he went through to refloat the Town Hall and his direct participation in the historic reopening of the Gibraltar border in 1982, now that 42 years later negotiations are still ongoing in an attempt to remove the border.
