Se me ha hecho largo, muy largo, y creo que es un sentir general, y se podría calificar como «annus horribilis». O será que a cierta edad el tiempo se hace muy lento.
Lo mas destacable, para mí, lamentablemente, es confirmar que nuestros representantes, los políticos (de todo el mundo, no sólo los nuestros) no han dado la talla. No han sabido responder a sus responsabilidades. Y así estamos.
Lo más relevante, a nivel nacional, ha sido la respuesta a la DANA. Qué gran desastre de previsión, de avisos de emergencias, de respuestas a la que se estaba liando, de ayuda a la población y celeridad en las respuestas, en las ayudas.. .
Sólo la sociedad civil, los voluntarios, los alcaldes y los funcionarios, las distintas policías, los bomberos, protección civil o el ejército, parece que han funcionado.
Por eso digo siempre que éste es un país que funciona a pesar y por encima de los gobernantes. Aunque no sepan, ni siquiera son capaces de dejar de confrontar sus mezquinas ideas para conservar sus cuotas de poder. Un poder vacío porque en realidad no mandan. No mandan nada, afortunadamente.
Y seguimos sin noticias del «acuerdo post brexit» para que se establezcan unas reglas de juego claras para regular las relaciones y el «modus operandi» entre Gibraltar y la Unión Europea, o sea, con España, y concretamente, con La Línea y el Campo de Gibraltar.
Queremos que desaparezca la frontera YA, y según dicen, según me dicen, está todo cerrado, todas las complejas disposiciones del nuevo tratado acordadas. Pero parece que los políticos de allá, de Gibraltar, y los de acá, de Madrid, no se atreven en estos momentos, con las respectivas situaciones de conflicto, a hacerlo público, a dar la cara, para no ser acusados unos y otros de haber «vendido» la soberanía, un concepto ya caduco pendiente de revisión.
Pero en el nuevo año confío en que se acaben, o se congelen, las guerras que sufrimos, aunque apenas nos toquen. Trump impondrá a Ucrania con Rusia, y a Israel con sus vecinos, la «pax romana».
Y termino con un deseo para 2025 que se despejen, al menos, algunas incertidumbres.

AND 2024 HAS PASSED
It has been long, very long, and I think it is a general feeling, and could be described as «annus horribilis». Or maybe it is that time goes by very slowly when you get to a certain age.
The most remarkable thing, for me, unfortunately, is the confirmation that our representatives, the politicians (from all over the world, not only ours) have not lived up to their responsibilities. They have failed to live up to their responsibilities. And so here we are.
The most relevant thing, at the national level, has been the handling of the DANA. It was a great disaster in terms of foresight, emergency warnings, responses to what was happening, aid to the population and speed of response and assistance… .
Only civil society, volunteers, mayors and civil servants, the various police forces, fire brigades, civil protection and the defence forces seem to have responded.
That is why I always say that this is a country that works despite and above those in power. Although they don’t know how to, they are not even capable of not confronting their own petty ideas in order to keep their share of power. An empty power because they don’t actually rule. They don’t rule over anything, fortunately.
And we still have no news of the «post-Brexit agreement» to establish clear rules of play for regulating relations and the «modus operandi» between Gibraltar and the European Union, in other words, with Spain, and specifically, with La Línea and the Campo de Gibraltar.
We want the border to disappear NOW, and according to what they say, according to what they tell me, everything is settled, all the complex provisions for the new treaty have been decided. But it seems that the politicians there, in Gibraltar, and those here, in Madrid, do not seem to have the courage to go ahead and go public, to show their faces, so as not to be accused of having «sold out» sovereignty, a concept that is already out of date and pending revision.
However, in the new year I hope that the wars we are suffering will end, or be halted, even if they barely touch us. Trump will impose on Ukraine with Russia, and on Israel with its neighbours, the «Pax Romana».
I close my remarks with a wish that 2025 will at least clear up some uncertainties.
