Disfrutamos de un Café con todo un veterano en la industria del golf en la zona de Sotogrande que asume con la ilusión de un debutante su nueva etapa en el San Roque Club II
Compartimos con Ricardo Andrades un agradable paseo por el espectacular recorrido del New Course de San Roque Club, que desde el pasado mes de mayo vuelven a disfrutar jugadores visitantes y residentes de la zona.
La llegada del nuevo grupo inversor, Berwick Real Estates, ha supuesto una nueva vida y un futuro ilusionante para el campo de golf más desconocido de San Roque, cuyos nuevos adjudicatarios, para iniciar su proyecto, han confiado en la experiencia de nuestro invitado, el único director de campos de golf autóctono de la zona.
Aunque nació en La Línea Ricardo se considera un vecino más de Pueblo Nuevo, donde ha vivido toda su vida “salvo los años de Universidad en Granada y otro más que viví en el Reino Unido para perfeccionar mi inglés”, comienza a contarnos nuestro invitado.
Precisamente ese dominio del inglés adquirido le facilitó la entrada al mercado laboral en la hostelería, al igual que a muchos otros jóvenes del Valle del Guadiaro por la creciente demanda de la industria turística de la zona. “Mi primer destino fue el hotel Patricia durante unos meses hasta que Álex Medina me dio la oportunidad de entrar en el Suite Hotel de entonces, lo que ahora es el San Roque Club, uno de los primeros hoteles dedicados al golf en la zona. Tras un paréntesis de seis meses trabajando en la Expo 92 de Sevilla, volví al SRC donde ya me quedé varios años trabajando de recepcionista, coordinador de grupos y departamento comercial”.
Mientras iba acumulando toda esa experiencia en la hostelería, Ricardo fue conectando con el golf, un deporte que, en un principio ni siquiera practicaba. “Nunca se me había pasado por la cabeza, de joven yo era más de fútbol. Pero tras entrar en San Roque Club empecé a jugar y me enganchó totalmente”, sonríe nuestro protagonista.
Sin duda, como él mismo reconoce, el golf ha marcado su vida, sobre todo durante su larga etapa vinculado al campo de Almenara. “Me llamaron de NH para desarrollar la oferta de golf en Almenara, y ahí he estado 18 años, trabajando también para los NH de Marbella, Lanzarote, Mallorca, haciendo la apertura de un resort en Sicilia… hasta 2023. A nivel profesional el golf me ha dado la oportunidad de trabajar y viajar por toda Europa. Desde Noruega, Suecia, Italia y centro Europa hasta Turquía, el norte de África e incluso México, paseando el nombre de esta zona por medio mundo”.
Tras su salida de Almenara, nuestro protagonista no tardó mucho en volver a estar en activo. “Poco tiempo después recibo una llamada para presentarme el proyecto de San Roque Golf&Resort. Los nuevos inversores buscaban alguien con experiencia en el sector, que conociera la zona y cómo iniciar la actividad de un campo de golf”.
“Lo más bonito es que éste es el mismo campo en el que empecé, con lo que es una vuelta a mis orígenes. Tras tanto tiempo en un mismo sitio, lanzar un proyecto nuevo es emocionante, te carga las pilas. Me siento como si tuviera 30 años, vengo cada día doce o trece horas con toda la ilusión del mundo”, sonríe Ricardo, que nos aporta más detalles del proyecto. “En abril sólo teníamos el campo, ya que la casa club aún la compartimos con San Roque Club, con lo que teníamos que empezar desde cero. Desde el 16 de mayo ya tenemos el campo en funcionamiento con instalaciones provisionales y estamos desarrollando el proyecto poco a poco”.
“Este campo es una maravilla, en una finca de alcornoques y acebuches sin ninguna construcción. Aquí puedes jugar rodeado de plena naturaleza y con vistas al mar”, nos explica Ricardo en nuestro paseo por el New Course. “Berwick sabe que este campo tiene un potencial tremendo sin necesidad de tocar el diseño original de Perry Dye y Seve Ballesteros. La casa club que plantean es espectacular y el hotel aún más, tanto por su diseño como por su ubicación”.
Para Ricardo, San Roque Golf&Resort supondrá un impulso más a la industria del golf de la zona, completando una oferta que pocos enclaves golfísticos pueden igualar en el mundo. “Podremos atraer a un tipo de cliente que busca un campo de este estilo, que puede ser de competición, porque es bastante largo, pero que también se amolda al jugador medio, y con una calidad en su diseño que pocos campos tienen”.
“Otros compañeros en la zona estaban deseando que comenzásemos, porque saben que este campo es una joya escondida a la que no se le había dado el valor que debe tener. Ya estamos vendiendo abonos porque tendremos un número limitado para que el club tenga vida social asegurada, pero San Roque Golf&Resort será completamente comercial. Ahora necesitamos tiempo para comercializarlo, pero yo sueño con llevar este campo a donde se pretendía cuando se diseñó”, nos comenta en el final de nuestro paseo su nuevo director, cuya mirada refleja toda la ilusión que está poniendo en este proyecto que va a suponer un paso más en la oferta golfística de San Roque y Sotogrande.

Ricardo Andrades ‘The New Course remains an undiscovered treasure’.
We enjoyed a coffee with a veteran in the golf industry of the Sotogrande area who undertakes with the enthusiasm of a newcomer his new role in the San Roque Club II.
We shared a pleasant walk around the spectacular New Course at San Roque Club with Ricardo Andrades, which has been available to visiting players and residents of the area since last May once again.
The arrival of the new investment group, Berwick Real Estates, has brought new life and an exciting future for the most unsung golf course in San Roque, whose new owners have entrusted the experience of our guest, the only native golf course manager in the area, to launch their project.
Although he was born in La Línea, Ricardo considers himself a neighbour of Pueblo Nuevo, where he has lived all his life ‘except for the years I spent at university in Granada and the other year I lived in the United Kingdom in order to master the English language’, our guest begins to tell us.
It was precisely this mastery of English that made it easier for him to enter the job market in the hotel and catering industry, like many other young people in the Guadiaro Valley, due to the growing demand in the area’s tourist industry. ‘My first destination was Hotel Patricia for a few months until Alex Medina gave me the opportunity to join the then called Suite Hotel, which is now the San Roque Club, one of the first golf hotels in the area. After a six-month break working at the Expo 92 in Seville, I returned to the SRC where I stayed for several years working as receptionist, group coordinator and in the commercial department’.
While he was accumulating all that experience in the hotel business, Ricardo began to connect with golf, a sport that, at first, he didn’t even play. ‘It had never crossed my mind, when I was younger I was more into football. But after joining the San Roque Club I started to play and I was immediately hooked’, our protagonist recalls with a smile.
Undoubtedly, as he himself acknowledges, golf has marked his life, especially during the long period when he was linked to the Almenara course. ‘They called me from NH to develop the golf experience in Almenara, and I have since stayed there for 18 years, while also working for NH in Marbella, Lanzarote, Mallorca and opening a resort in Sicily… that is until 2023. Golf has given me the opportunity to work and travel all over Europe on a professional level. From Norway, Sweden, Italy and Central Europe to Turkey, North Africa and even Mexico, spreading the word on this our area around the world’.
After his departure from Almenara, it didn’t take long for our protagonist to become active again. ‘Shortly afterwards, I received a call that introduced me to the San Roque Golf&Resort project. The new investors were looking for someone with experience in the sector, who knew the area and how to start up a golf course’.
‘The beauty of it is that this is the same field where I first started, so it means a return to my origins. After so long in the same place, launching a new project is exciting, it recharges your energy. I feel like I’m 30 years old, I come every day for twelve or thirteen hours with great enthusiasm’, Ricardo says happily, as he gives us more details about the project. ‘Back in April we only had the initial pitch, as the clubhouse is still to be shared with San Roque Club, meaning that we had to start from scratch. We have opened the course for business since the 16th of May, using provisional facilities as we slowly continue developing the project.
‘The course is marvellous, located within a cork oak and wild olive tree estate and free of any buildings. You get to play while surrounded by nature and with views to the sea,’ Ricardo explained as he gave us a tour of the New Course. ‘Berwick knows that this course has tremendous potential even without changing the original design by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros. The clubhouse they are planning to build is spectacular and the hotel even more so, both for its design and its location’.
Ricardo believes that San Roque Golf&Resort will provide a further boost to the area’s golf industry, complementing an existing offer that few golfing enclaves in the world can match. ‘We will be able to attract a type of customer who is looking for a course of this specific style, one that can suit competitions, because of its considerable length, but which also caters to the average player. It has a design quality that few other golf courses can match’.
‘Other colleagues in the area were keen for us to start because they know that this course remains an undiscovered treasure that hasn’t been given its due importance. We are already selling season tickets as we will keep the number limited to ensure the club has an assured social life, but San Roque Golf&Resort will be fully commercial. We now need time to market it, but I dream of taking this course to where it was intended to reach when it was first designed,’ its new director tells us as we conclude our tour, with a look in his eyes that reflects his enthusiasm for this project, which will represent a further step forward in the golfing attractions offered by San Roque and Sotogrande.
