Los Encuentros de SGplus han servido de espacio de reunión y debate sobre los principales temas de Sotogrande en este 2023
Turismo, empresas, Medio Ambiente, Gibraltar, deportes como el golf y el polo, la sanidad y juventud. Todo esto y mucho más ha tenido cabida en los Encuentros de SGplus, donde protagonistas y expertos en cada sector nos han dado su opinión mes a mes sobre los principales temas de actualidad en Sotogrande.
REDES, el Club de Negocio del Campo de Gibraltar
En nuestro primer Encuentro de 2023 conocimos REDES, creado por un grupo de empresarios de la comarca en 2016, que desde entonces han conseguido una generación de negocio conjunta de unos 15 millones de euros.
Pertenecientes a sectores de actividad muy diversos, los miembros de redes nos explicaron el funcionamiento de este grupo en el que cada componente comparte contactos, experiencias e iniciativas con el resto, ayudándose entre todos a mejorar y crecer en sus respectivas actividades. Así nos lo detallaron su presidente, Francisco Arroyal, junto a otros miembros de REDES: Imanol García de Albéniz, Karina Salas, Raúl Pluma, José Antonio Pelayo, Lydia Ruiz y Sergio Tamayo.
El futuro de la comarca con Gibraltar, a debate
El 2023 estaba llamado a ser el año del acuerdo entre el Reino Unido y la Unión Europea sobre Gibraltar tras el Brexit al haber comenzado las conversaciones en 2022.
Sin embargo las negociaciones se han ido alargando en el tiempo, tal y como ya vaticinaban en febrero varios de nuestros invitados para analizar este tema desde la perspectiva comarcal: el alcalde de La Línea, Juan Franco; el entonces presidente de la Mancomunidad, Juan Lozano; el exalcalde linense Juan Carmona; el presidente de REDES, Francisco Arroyal; y el reconocido empresario linense Lorenzo Periáñez.
Aunque todos coincidían en la necesidad de un acuerdo positivo para ambos lados de la Verja, Juan Franco ya advertía que “son muchos los factores que van a impedir un acuerdo definitivo”, destacando que “el Reino Unido no aceptará nunca algo que vaya en contra de los deseos de los gibraltareños. Veo el tema del futuro control fronterizo como un punto insalvable”. Por el momento, durante este 2023 el tiempo le ha dado la razón.
Mujeres empresarias de Sotogrande
Con motivo del Día Internacional de la Mujer, reunimos en marzo a un nutrido grupo de mujeres empresarias de Sotogrande de sectores tan variados como el inmobiliario, la hostelería, el comercio, la sanidad o la construcción.
Marta Moralo de Sotogrande Living; Stephanie Noll de Noll&Partners; Raquel Ruiz de Supermercados Ruiz Galán; la notaría María Antonia Domínguez; Ana Verdugo y Marta Bassadone de L’essenza; la pediatra Ana Cabrera; Susana Fontecha, de Kassa Sotogrande; Lydia Ruiz, de LV Estates; Lulú Pourolois, de Marina Plaza; Lina Flores; Patricia Sanagu, de Origen Yoga; Cristina Leveque, de Humble&Crumble; Alejandra Carazo de Nyumba Desing; María José Gil, de SG Obras; Silvia Serrano, del Almacén del Puerto y Ké Magazine; y Ana Aguilera de SGplus fueron las protagonistas de este encuentro. Algunas veteranas con años de actividad y otras con negocios más recientes, pero todas mujeres emprendedoras que apuestan por Sotogrande para desarrollar su actividad.
Encuentros: Deporte y juventud
Dedicamos nuestro Encuentro de abril a jóvenes figuras del deporte local, demostrando que Sotogrande y su entorno alberga múltiples disciplinas deportivas para la juventud.
Blanca Gómez, ciclista del Valverde Team; Jesús Villalobos y Jaime Martínez, del San Roque Rugby Club; Curro Ramírez y Andrea Lozano, del Club Dressage de Sotogrande; Javier García, del CD Guadiaro de fútbol; James Butler, nadador del Colegio Internacional de Sotogrande; los golfistas Juan Carlos Gil, Enrique Cuevas y Almudena Agüera de La Cañada; Roberto Iturrioz, de Iridike Polo y la tenista Victoria Herrera. Algunos de ellos llegando ya al profesionalismo, otros trabajando con ese objetivo, y con todos hablamos de su vida diaria, sus rutinas de entrenamiento, y cómo viven su pasión por el deporte.
Medio Ambiente, retos y necesidades en nuestra tierra
En mayo recordamos el Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente analizando aspectos importantes de nuestro entorno desde la gestión pública y el sector privado con Adrián Vaca, alcalde de Castellar; el abogado Juan Carmona, exalcalde de La Línea; Sergio Sánchez, gerente de la Entidad Urbanística de Conservación de Sotogrande; y Enrique Domínguez, licenciado en Ciencias Ambientales y gerente de la consultora especializada en temas medioambientales Q Sistema.
El golf, motor económico para Sotogrande que sigue a pleno rendimiento
En un año con novedades tan importantes en el mundo del golf para Sotogrande, pudimos analizar la actualidad de este deporte fundamental para esta zona con una excepcional representación del sector: Javier Reviriego, director de Valderrama; Kostka Horno, del RC Sotogrande; Javier Jiménez Casquet y Fernando Padrón, de La Hacienda Links; Jaime Ravina de La Cañada; Josué Mascuñán de San Roque Club, y Óscar Checa, responsable de Almenara y La Reserva.
Con ellos conversamos sobre la vital importancia del golf y la actividad económica que genera en Sotogrande y Andalucía. Además de problemas como la sequía, y cómo la industria del golf ha sido una de las más avanzadas en la gestión y aprovechamiento del agua. También comentamos la gran novedad de la llegada del LIV Golf a Valderrama y, aunque aún no estaba confirmado oficialmente, la previsible celebración del Edam Masters en el RC Sotogrande.
Los veranos en Sotogrande
El verano es el momento más esperado del año en Sotogrande, con miles de visitantes atraídos por la inigualable oferta ocio de este destino turístico de máxima calidad. Una oferta que cada año evoluciona y mejora constantemente con más opciones de ocio, arte, música, moda y gastronomía, y que analizamos en este 2023 con Belén Ibáñez, de SO/ Sotogrande y La Reserva Club; Antonio Merino del Santa María Equestrian Club; el artista Osvaldo Lobalzo y su mujer Maite Pérez; Lulú Pouroulis, de Fresco Marina y Chus Sánchez, del grupo Trocadero.
Entre las bambalinas del polo
En plena celebración del Torneo Internacional de Polo de Sotogrande, quisimos conocer los detalles del trabajo que hace posible un espectáculo deportivo que disfrutan miles de personas cada verano, pero con una labor diaria desconocida para el gran público.
Para ello reunimos en la mesa de Fresco Marina a miembros de Minuto7, empresa organizadora de la temporada de Ayala en Sotogrande, como Malena Stirling; Juan Pedro Girou y el fisioterapeuta Matías Pérez. Además de Álvaro Castillejo, de Ayala Polo Club y el polista Clemente Zabaleta.
Sanidad en Sotogrande
La sanidad es un servicio fundamental para una zona como Sotogrande, con una extraordinaria importancia a nivel residencial y turístico. Para conocer la actualidad de la cobertura sanitaria en esta zona charlamos con empresas y profesionales del sector como: Ignacio Jiménez y Pilar Díaz, con su clínica dental y cosmética de Pueblo Nuevo; Javier Verde, de Keti Eye Clinic; la nutricionista Rebeca de la Cuadra; Inmaculada Lanzas, de Helicópteros Sanitarios y Sira Morales, de Quirón Salud Campo de Gibraltar.
Cuestiones como el destacado aumento de la población en Sotogrande tras la pandemia, los diferentes perfiles de pacientes, y las opciones más cercanas para acudir a un gran centro sanitario, fueron algunos de los temas analizados por nuestros invitados.
Alquiler en Sotogrande
El alquiler es una parte importante del mercado inmobiliario en Sotogrande, sobre todo en su vertiente más turística, con cientos de visitantes extranjeros y nacionales que eligen esta opción cada año. La sequía
La escasez de agua es uno de los problemas más graves en el Campo de Gibraltar en este 2023, tanto para la población como para sectores económicos tan importantes como la industria, la agricultura y el turismo.
Por ello reunimos en nuestro último Encuentro del año a diferentes representantes institucionales y del ámbito privado como: José Manuel Alcántara, director general de ARCGISA; el alcalde de Castellar, Adrián Vaca; el concejal de Medio Ambiente de San Roque, Juan Serván, y al director del Club de Golf La Cañada, Jaime Ravina.
Con ellos analizamos los negativos efectos de la continua escasez de lluvias, pero conocimos también los diferentes proyectos que ya están en marcha y que podrán garantizar la estabilidad del suministro de agua en la comarca en un futuro cada vez más próximo.

Gatherings of 2023. An analysis of the most relevant events this year in Sotogrande.
The SGplus Gatherings have served as a space for meetings and debates on Sotogrande’s key themes for 2023.
Tourism, business, environment, Gibraltar, sports such as golf and polo, health, and youth. All these and much more have had a place in the SGplus Gatherings, where leading figures and experts in each sector have given us their opinion on a monthly basis about the main current news topics in Sotogrande.
REDES, the Campo de Gibraltar Business Club
At our first 2023 Gathering we met REDES, established in 2016 by a group of entrepreneurs from the region, which has since generated a joint turnover of around 15 million euros.
Belonging to very varied sectors of activity, the members of REDES explained to us how this group works: each member shares contacts, experiences, and initiatives with the rest, helping each other to improve and grow in their respective activities. This was explained by its president, Francisco Arroyal, together with other members of REDES: Imanol García de Albéniz, Karina Salas, Raúl Pluma, José Antonio Pelayo, Lydia Ruiz and Sergio Tamayo.
The region’s future alongside Gibraltar is up for debate
2023 was set to be the year in which the agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union on Gibraltar after Brexit was to be reached, given negotiations began in 2022.
However, the negotiations have been dragging on for a long time, as was predicted in February by several of our guests invited to analyse this issue from a regional perspective: the mayor of La Línea, Juan Franco; the then president of the Commonwealth, Juan Lozano; the former mayor of La Línea, Juan Carmona; the president of REDES, Francisco Arroyal; and the prominent businessman from La Línea, Lorenzo Periáñez.
Although all agreed on the need for a positive agreement for both sides of the fence, Juan Franco warned that «there are many factors that are going to prevent a definitive agreement», stressing that «The UK will never accept anything that goes against Gibraltarians’ wishes. In this sense, I see the issue of future border control as an insurmountable point». So far, time has proved him right in 2023.
Sotogrande’s businesswomen
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we gathered a large group of Sotogrande businesswomen from various sectors such as real estate, hospitality, commerce, health, and construction in March.

Some of them are veterans with years of activity and others are more recent entrepreneurs, but all of them are women who are committed to develop their activity in Sotogrande.
Gatherings: Sports and youth
Our April Gathering was a celebration of young local sports stars, showcasing that Sotogrande and the surrounding area are home to a multitude of sporting activities for the youth.

Some of them have already made it to the professional ranks, others are working towards that goal, and we talked to all of them about their daily lives, their training routines, and how they live their passion for sports.
Environment, our land’s challenges and needs
This May we commemorated World Environment Day by analysing important aspects of our environment from both the public and private sectors with Adrián Vaca, mayor of Castellar; lawyer Juan Carmona, former mayor of La Línea; Sergio Sánchez, manager of the Sotogrande Urban Conservation Entity; and Enrique Domínguez, graduate in Environmental Sciences and manager of Q Sistema, a consultancy firm specialising in environmental issues.
Golf, the leading economic engine for Sotogrande, still in full swing
In a year with so many important developments in the golf world for Sotogrande, we were able to analyse the current situation of this fundamental sport for this area with an exceptional representation of the sector: Javier Reviriego, director of Valderrama; Kostka Horno, from RC Sotogrande; Javier Jiménez Casquet and Fernando Padrón, from La Hacienda Links; Jaime Ravina from La Cañada; Josué Mascuñán from San Roque Club, and Óscar Checa, head of Almenara and La Reserva.
We talked to them about the vital importance of golf and the economic activity it generates in Sotogrande and Andalusia. In addition to problems such as drought, and how the golf industry has become a major leader in the management and use of water. We also discussed the exciting news of the arrival of LIV Golf to Valderrama and, although not yet officially confirmed, the foreseeable celebration of the Edam Masters at RC Sotogrande.
Sotogrande Summers
Summer is the most eagerly awaited time of the year in Sotogrande, with thousands of visitors drawn by the unrivalled leisure opportunities on offer in this premium tourist destination. A range of options that is constantly evolving and improving year after year, with more leisure, art, music, fashion, and gastronomy, and which we analyse in this 2023 Gathering along with Belén Ibáñez, from SO/ Sotogrande and La Reserva Club; Antonio Merino from Santa María Equestrian Club; the artist Osvaldo Lobalzo and his wife Maite Pérez; Lulú Pouroulis, from Fresco Marina and Chus Sánchez, from the Trocadero group.
Behind the scenes at the Polo Grounds
In the middle of the Sotogrande International Polo Tournament, we decided to find out the details of the day-to-day work that makes possible a sporting spectacle that thousands of people enjoy every summer, but where the daily labour is unknown to the general public.
To this end, we brought together at the Fresco Marina table members of Minuto7, the company that organises the Ayala season in Sotogrande, such as Malena Stirling; Juan Pedro Girou and the physiotherapist Matías Pérez. In addition to Álvaro Castillejo, from Ayala Polo Club and polo player Clemente Zabaleta.

Healthcare is a fundamental service in an area like Sotogrande, with an extraordinary residential and touristic importance. Issues such as the significant increase in the population in Sotogrande after the pandemic, the different patient profiles, and the closest options for going to a major healthcare centre, were some of the topics discussed by our guests.
Renting in Sotogrande
Renting is an important part of Sotogrande’s real estate market, particularly in its more touristic areas, with hundreds of foreign and national visitors choosing to rent property in Sotogrande every year. To find out more about the current rental market in Sotogrande, we spoke to Nydia Sutto, from RentinSotogrande, Sara Delgado, from Sotogrande Home; and Charlie Gubbins and Jorge Martí, from Noll Sotogrande.
The drought
Water scarcity is one of the most serious problems in Campo de Gibraltar in 2023, both in terms of population and economic sectors as important as industry, agriculture, and tourism.
For this reason, we brought together in our last Gathering of the year different institutional and private representatives such as: José Manuel Alcántara, General Manager of ARCGISA; Adrián Vaca, Mayor of Castellar; Juan Serván, Councillor for the Environment of San Roque, and Jaime Ravina, Director of the La Cañada Golf Club.
Together we analysed the negative effects of the continuous lack of rainfall, and we also learned about the different projects that are already underway and that will guarantee the stability of the water supply in the region in the near future.
