FITUR 2025: an essential event for the development of tourism in Campo de Gibraltar

Our first Gathering of 2025 is dedicated to the now traditional International Tourism Fair appointment. A fundamental opportunity for the promotion of the region, with internationally recognised destinations such as Sotogrande, but also to promote its smaller municipalities.

Every January the IFEMA exhibition centre in Madrid is filled with thousands of tourist proposals from all over the world, with countries and regions showing their attractions to capture the attention of tour operators and visitors alike.

Campo de Gibraltar will attend this event for another year in the Andalusian Hall to continue showing the enormous diversity of its tourist offer, with world references such as Tarifa and its wind sports, Sotogrande with its unrivalled golf offer and its quality tourism and excellence, or universally renowned personalities such as Paco de Lucía.

In our first Gathering of 2025 we are looking for details of the proposals to be presented by the San Roque Town Hall. However, in addition to these major figures we mentioned, we will also take a look at the proposals of the smaller towns in the region, which still have genuine assets that remain to be discovered by the general public. To this end, we brought together at the Fresco Marina table the mayors of Castellar, Adrián Vaca, and Tesorillo, Jesús Fernández; the deputy mayor of Los Barrios, Pablo García; and the municipal technician for Tourism in San Roque, Carlos Jordán.

One of the municipalities in the area with an outstanding increase in tourism in recent years is Castellar de la Frontera, for which its qualification as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain has undoubtedly been a turning point, as its mayor acknowledges.

‘It has been an invaluable publicity campaign, with national media showcasing our natural and heritage wealth. Since we became part of this network, the number of overnight stays and visitors has doubled. We have even reopened a hotel that had been closed, and both the Castle Hotel and the Casa Convento de la Almoraima now have much longer periods of high occupancy, with an increase in staff numbers like never before,’ confirms Adrián Vaca, who highlights other initiatives such as the Almoraima strategic plan and the future development of the Jarandilla area, which will give a new boost to the local tourist offer. All while awaiting the major private investment project that will be coming to his municipality with the tourism and golf development of La Zagaleta.

‘Our tourist activity is also growing,’ says Pablo García, ’the mountain bike centre and activities such as hiking and mycology have grown a lot. And in fact Los Barrios is the town with the highest hotel capacity in Campo de Gibraltar without being a tourist town, and with hotels always at 80-90% occupancy. But our problem is the overnight stays, which are very short because business tourism is more important in our case than holiday tourism. Both this year and next year we will be focusing on promoting this type of tourism in addition to the commercial and leisure potential we have,’ said the deputy mayor of Los Barrios.

‘Each municipality works in its own area and with its own plans, but tourism knows no borders,’ says Carlos Jordán, who is committed to ‘selling everything there is in the region if we want to extend the stay of incoming visitors. To strengthen our offer, it is necessary that people have options nearby so that they stay in our area while enjoying the activities they want to pursue in our surroundings’.

‘In our region you can enjoy the best beaches in the world, a rich gastronomy, or you can get lost in the middle of nature where there is no network reception,’ Jesús Fernández points out, ‘and it is precisely in Tesorillo that people come looking for that disconnect. They enjoy golf in Sotogrande, go horse riding or on a bike route, and stay at the Hotel Monasterio to get away from their usual routine,’ says the mayor of the youngest town in the region, which has been committed to family tourism and relaxation in nature since its independence from the Jimena province in 2018.

In this sense, both Jesús and Adrián, mayors of two of the small inland villages in the region, highlight the increase in this type of tourist activity after the pandemic, which their municipalities must take advantage of. ‘With the limitation of having 80% of your municipality located within a protected reserve such as Los Alcornocales, the fact that more people are looking for destinations with free natural areas is an opportunity for us. That’s why they have to let us work and develop projects in the 20% of the municipality that is available to us’.

We asked our guests to give us a preview of the main features that they will be presenting at FITUR from their respective municipalities. In the case of Castellar, its mayor confirms that they will continue to highlight its status as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. ‘This year we will hold the Regional Assembly of the association and in 2026 we will host the International Assembly of the World’s Most Beautiful Villages’.

‘We will continue to focus on our nature and heritage tourism, thanks to the exceptional location of our town, and we will also promote family tourism because we meet all the requirements that this type of visitor is looking for. When you enter Castellar, you determine your time there,’ concludes Adrián, using this meaningful slogan about his municipality, before we move on to Pablo García.

‘This year we presented the new tourist brand of Los Barrios and a new tourism website, where we show all our tourist assets. With this new image, we will be launching new proposals for next year,’ Pablo confirms. ‘One of them will be to promote the Palmones business park as a leisure, commercial and business centre’.

As for Tesorillo, its mayor confirms that ‘we have a promotional video with our festivities and traditions, such as the Feria and the Carnival. But we are focusing more on family tourism, experiences such as horse riding and our advantage of being close to destinations such as Sotogrande, Castellar or Jimena. In Tesorillo, rural houses are becoming very active within the town centre for families who come to spend a few days and want to enjoy various routes through the area that begin in our village’.

For San Roque, Carlos tells us several details that will be presented at FITUR, where in addition to the obvious prominence of golf and Sotogrande, they are also promoting other initiatives. ‘We are the southernmost golf destination in Europe, with courses of enormous quality and world fame as well as tournaments of the highest international stature. This, together with polo, the marina and the project development in La Alcaidesa of the La Hacienda resort, makes for a very powerful and varied offer. Nevertheless, we also have a very interesting historic centre and we are working to make it more widely known. The axis of our historic centre with the archaeological site of Carteya is an attraction that is selling very well, along with the guided bunker tours, which are also proving very successful’.

‘At FITUR we will make two presentations, a general and very innovative one with all the diversity of attractions in the municipality and another on accessible tourism. This inclusive tourism is becoming very successful and we will present the DALCO certification of quality in guided tours together with the accessibility guide, the first of its kind at provincial level. It includes all the accessible resources in a single site’, explains the municipal technician about another channel of tourist activity in which San Roque and the Campo de Gibraltar are also emerging as a leading tourist destination.
