Hoy me vais a permitir que hable de algo muy próximo e importante para mí. Como ya sabéis, el golf es mi pasión desde que tengo uso de razón. Desde los 14 meses forma parte de mi vida este deporte y, en gran medida, tiene dos culpables: mis padres.

Este 2023 el golf español ha tenido mil momentos únicos con los que hemos disfrutado a nivel amateur y profesional. La disputa de LIV Andalucía en el Real Club Valderrama o el Andalucía Masters en el Real Club Sotogrande han sido dos eventos que han quedado marcados en nuestra retina. Pero, para mí, este 2023 venia con una fecha marcada en rojo: el 50 aniversario de Juan Quirós como golfista profesional.
Juan Quirós lleva desde los 17 años ejerciendo su profesión como jugador profesional de golf por todo el mundo, más de 850 torneos internacionales y más de mil en total contando los disputados en territorio nacional atesoran esta longeva carrera deportiva en la que el denominador común siempre ha sido el mismo: la pasión.

Desde que formalizó su pase como profesional a los 17 años (año 1973), Juan Quirós se ha mantenido siempre fiel a una caballerosidad, humildad, constancia, trabajo y, sobre todo, una sonrisa que llega antes que él a cualquier lugar. Es su seña de identidad. Muchos de sus compañeros profesionales de estas últimas cinco décadas lo definen como “sonrisa infinita y swing privilegiado” e, incluso, como un superdotado por no haber perdido ni un ápice de pelo a pesar del estrés que genera esta profesión en la que un sólo golpe te puede llevar del éxito al ostracismo más absoluto en sólo un par de metros…
Desde Fred Couples hasta Greg Norman pasando por el mismo Severiano Ballesteros o Gary Player han destacado de Juan Quirós su gran capacidad para ser uno de los mejores ball strickers de su generación (en el European Tour primero y luego en el Seniors Tour). Del putter mejor no hablamos…
Pero si de algo se siente (nos sentimos orgullosos) es del gran legado que ha ido labrándose en estos primeros cincuenta años de cerrera golfística profesional en
activo que atesora Juan Quirós. Junto a Andrés Merchán y Juan Bezares (alcalde de San Roque en la década de los años 80 y alcalde pedáneo de Guadiaro respectivamente en estas mismas fechas), consiguieron hacer realidad el sueño engendrado al amparo de los antiguos caddies que fundaron en 1982 el primer
club de golf sin campo de España: La Cañada.
Desde sus inicios su involucración fue indudable desde los primeros pasos impartiendo su sapiencia en la calle de prácticas ubicada en Guadiaro hasta la apertura del actual recorrido diseñado por Robert T. Jones SR. Hace apenas unos días en La Hacienda Links Resort la Real Federación Española de Golf y la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf hacían entrega de una placa conmemorativa por este hito histórico de 50 años impartiendo simpatía y swing único de Juan Quirós.
Gonzaga Escauriza y Pablo Mansilla encabezaban un grupo de amigos que no dudaron en acudir a celebrar este cumpleaños como profesional de golf de uno de los mejores jugadores históricos españoles de los últimos cincuenta años.
Sergio García, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Azahara Muñoz o Gonzalo Fernández Castaño no faltaron a la cita a este homenaje de manera virtual.
Gracias a Juan Quirós por acercarnos el mundo del golf a todos, por hacernos ver que el golf es un deporte inclusivo y en el que los valores que nos enseñan son
únicos. Gracias Juan Quirós porque hasta hace nada no entendía que mi padre es un genio de este deporte pero, sobre todo, un caballero buena persona del que sólo espero estar a la altura de llevar tu apellido.
Gracias Papá por tanto. ¡A por otros 50 años más impartiendo tu mejor golf por todo el mundo! ¡María seguirá tus pasos!

Please allow me to talk today about something very close and important to me. As you know, golf has been my passion for as long as I can remember. Since I was
14 months old, this sport has been part of my life and, to a large extent, I have two people to blame: my parents.
This 2023 Spanish golf has had a thousand unique moments that we have enjoyed at amateur and professional levels. The LIV Andalucía at Real Club Valderrama or the Andalucía Masters at Real Club Sotogrande have been two events that have been etched into our minds. But, for me, this 2023 brought a date highlighted in bold red: the 50th anniversary of Juan Quirós as a professional golfer.
Juan Quirós has been practising his trade as a professional golfer all over the world since he was 17 years old. More than 850 international tournaments and more than a thousand in total, counting those played on national territory, make up his long sporting career where the common denominator has always been the same: passion.
Four victories at the European Senior Tour place him as the most successful Spanish player on this circuit since its creation. This, together with his victory on the Challenge Tour and countless top threes and top tens on the European Tour (DP World Tour), make him one of the leading Spanish golfers of the last five decades…
The Spanish champion in all the professional categories since he was barely twenty years old when he was able to compete one on one with a great player from Cantabria, Severiano Ballesteros, at his club, the Real Club de Sotogrande. I played with the humility of being the second of eleven brothers and under the watchful eye of my grandfather, who was hidden in the bushes amongst the fields on the 14th tee, that, at that time, were still unspoilt…
Ever since he became a professional at the age of 17 (1973), Juan Quirós has always remained faithful to his gentlemanly nature, humility, perseverance, hard work and, above all, a smile that reaches everywhere he goes. infinite smile and a privileged swing” and even as a gifted man for not having lost an iota of hair despite the stress generated by this profession in which a single
blow can take you from success to absolute ostracism in just a couple of metres…
From Fred Couples to Greg Norman, including Severiano Ballesteros and Gary Player himself, Juan Quirós has been noted for his great ability as one of the best ball strickers of his generation (first on the European Tour and then on the Seniors Tour). As for the putter, let’s not even talk about it…
But if there is one thing he feels (we feel proud of) it is the great legacy that Juan Quirós has built up in these first fifty years of active professional golfing. Together with Andrés Merchán and Juan Bezares (mayor of San Roque in the 80’s and mayor of Guadiaro at the same time), they managed to make the dream of the old caddies who founded the first golf club without a course in Spain in 1982 a reality: La Cañada. From its beginnings, their involvement was inquestionable, starting with the first steps, imparting their wisdom on the practice fairway located in Guadiaro until the opening of the current course designed by Robert T. Jones SR.
Just a few days ago at La Hacienda Links Resort the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation presented Juan Quiros with a commemorative plaque for this historic milestone of 50 years of imparting his unique swing and sympathy. Gonzaga Escauriza and Pablo Mansilla led a group of friends who attended to celebrate this birthday as a golf professional of one of the best historic Spanish players of the last fifty years. Sergio García, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Azahara Muñoz and Gonzalo Fernández Castaño also attended this online homage.
Many thanks to Juan Quirós for bringing the world of golf to all of us, for making us see that golf is an all-inclusive sport and that the values it teaches us are unique. Thank you Juan Quirós, because until recently I had not understood that my father is a genius in this sport as well as, above all, a gentleman and a good person, and I only hope I can live up to your surname.
